Eric Hamrick, the #2 seed, puts defending state champion Brandon Young of Brusly on his back to score a fall in 3:04 for the Cavaliers. |
The defending state champion and number one seed from Brusly, Brandon Young, came to the tournament with a 35-5 records and championships at the Brusly 8, Spartan Invitational and Brusly Invitational. Along the way, he had victories over Wyatt Mallet (StL), Cameron Drummond (HC) and Charlie DeMocker (RUM). The road to his second finals appearance was not easy as he had to get past Lakeside's Noah Willis, who won the Riot on the Red and the Northwest Louisiana Regional, and placed second at the Evangel Holiday Classic and the Parkway Lone Survivor tournament. Young got through his state championship semifinals match with a fall in 3:07.
During the season, Young won the Raider 8 and the Brusly Invitational, while placing third in the Spartan Invitational and fourth at the Greater Baton Rouge Championships.
Second-seeded Eric Hamrick of De LaSalle had an even harder road to the state finals match at 220 lbs., but that is why it is better to be seeded first than second. Receiving a bye and then a forfeit may have not been the best way to enter the semifinals, though. Between Hamrick and the finals was #3 Jesse Melan of John Curtis. These two saw each other four times before the state tournament. Hamrick won the first two (7-3 and 7-4), lost the next one (via a 9-1 Major Decision) and Hamrick took the fourth match at the Ken Cole (7-2). After six minutes the #2 and #3 seeds were tied 1-1. The first takedown of the match went to Hamrick for a 3-1 Sudden Victory win.
Hamrick won the Cashio-Shriever at Jesuit, placed 2nd at the Trygg Memorial and the Ken Cole, and third at the Brusly Invitational.
Hamrick and Young are both juniors. Hence, a rematch may be "in the works" next season.
