A runner-up in 2016, De la Salle's Jeremiah James pins his way to a championship. |
A runner-up to South Plaquemines' John Wilson last year, Jeremiah James of De LaSalle, a junior, was not going to give up any leads again. James was 17-1 this year, with his only loss coming from Jesuit defending Division I state champion Corey Dublin in a 4-2 match. He won the Brusly Invitational and the GNO Division III District Championships. One of his last matches was a pin in 0:11 against Eric Bumgarden of John Curtis. Bumgarden was James' semifinal match, and the Curtis freshman showed improvement, lasting 1:45 in this match.
Sophomore D.J. Harvey of Lakeside was 20-1, with his loss coming at the hands of Datremecio White of Evangel who pinned James in 1:34 in the Eagle Open finals. Harvey returned the favor by pinning White in 2:30 at the Evangel Holiday Classic. His semifinals match was against the third-seeded White, and James persevered again by a fall in 4:20. White won the Riot on the Red, the Lone Survivor and NW LA Regionals tournaments. He placed second at the Eagle Open and third at the Evangel Holiday Classic.
