A Brother Martin squad of non-starters won the Jefferson Invitational for a sixth consecutive year at the John Ehret Gym on Saturday, December 9th.  Behind champions Jake Spellman (106 lbs.), Michael Clapp (182 lbs.) and Kyle West (220 lbs.), the Crusaders scored 125.5 points, which was 12.5 points more than the runner-up Rummel Raiders.  Chris Montalbano won the 126 lbs. weight class for the Rummel Raiders and was awarded the Outstanding Wrestler trophy.  Dawson Mire gave the Raiders their second title at 152 lbs.  With only seven wrestlers, the Basile Bearcats had two champions, Gavin Christ and Isaac Cortez, a runner-up, a third-place winner and a fourth-place winner, to finish third with 101.5 points.  Anthony Ribando and Eduardo Garcia won titles for the Shaw Eagles. The remaining titles were won by Bonnabel's Sergio Maldonado, Trent Mahoney of East Ascension, Justin Ingram of Spanish Fort, Alabama, Bryson Adams of Covington, and Roberto Rivero of Grace King.

Chris Montalbano of Rummel (left), in arguably the toughest weight class of the event, won the Outstanding Wrestler award.  The 126 lbs. weight class included defending Division II state champion Cooper Simon, whom Montalbano defeated 7-2, and John Ehret's Gage Sonnier whom Montalbano defeated 9-3.  In the finals, Montalbano defeated Jake Romig, an up-and-coming Holy Cross wrestler, 12-0. East Ascension's Trent Mahoney won the Most Efficient Team award by winning the 138 lbs. weight class as East Ascension's only entrant in the event.  This is a very new award and the incredibly ornate trophy for it was not completed by the date of the tournament.  LWN sources state the award will be sent to Mahoney once it is finished.
