Bossier City, LA - Kudos go to the state championship seeding committees.
In all three divisions, only 20 upsets were had, and 12 of those were the
most common type - a #5 seed defeating a #4 seed.
|
The event, held in the CentruyLink Center in Bossier City,
continues on Saturday when wrestling starts-up at 10 a.m.
A new format was used on Friday - only one session of wrestling,
without a break to clear-out of the arena, was held. There
will be a two sessions on Saturday. After the consolation finals
are completed (estimated to take until 4:00 p.m.), the arena will
be cleared to set-up for the finals ceremonies, which begin at
5:00 p.m. |

Division I
Heavily favored going into the Division I state championships in 2017, the
Brother Martin Crusaders placed a disappointing third behind runner-up
Jesuit and champion Holy Cross. The Crusaders had won the previous
five Division I team championships, worthy of the word "dynasty." This
year, they may just start a new one.
The Crusaders have a 37 point lead over Holy Cross after the first session
of the 2018 LHSAA State Wrestling Championships. On Saturday, they
will start with 12 semifinalists, and are favored in five of those
match-ups. The other two Crusaders are waiting-in-the-wings as
consolation semifinalists.
The second-place Tigers of Holy Cross have six semifinalists, and three are
favored in those matches. Jesuit has five semifinalists and are
favored in two of those matches.
Five semifinals matches consist of Brother Martin, Holy Cross and Jesuit
head-to-head matches.

Division II
In Division II Parkway holds a tenuous four-point lead over defending team
champion Teurlings Catholic. The Rebels have nine semifinalists and
are favored in five of them. The Panthers have 11 semifinalists and
are favored to win four of those matches. There is only one
head-to-head match between the two schools, and that is one in which Parkway
is favored. One Panther is in the consolation finals, along with two
Rebels. The team title may very well be decided in one of the later
finals matches on Saturday night.
