This was another weight class dominated by two wrestlers - Brother Martin junior Mack Brown and East Ascension senior Jordan Campbell. Brown's only Louisiana loss was a fall by Campbell in 1:26 in the Trey Culotta finals. Campbell had an early-season 25-9 technical fall loss to Live Oak's Anthony Ingram, but pinned Ingram in their remaining three matches. Brown defeated Campbell in a 6-1 sudden victory match in the finals of the Louisiana Classic. In the same tournament Brown defeated Ingram so the Crusader had the top bracket spot in the state championships, and Campbell was seeded second.
Brown was 23-1 against Louisiana competition and 29-2 overall. His one loss came in a 1:26 fall to Campbell in the Trey Culotta finals. Brown previously beat Campbell 13-6 in an early dual meet with East Ascension and then defeated the Spartan again in the Louisiana Classic 6-1 in a Sudden Victory round. He scored falls in 0:46, 1:25, 1:58 and 2:08 over fourth seed Caleb Jackson of Zachary to make the finals.
Campbell had a 38-3 record, which included the two losses to Brown and an early-season one to Live Oak's Anthony Ingram. Campbell avenged that loss with Gusto, defeating Ingram three times during the remainder of the season. Campbell also pinned his way to the finals. He scored falls in 3:49, 3:23 and 1:47 over Grace King's third-seeded Roberto Rivero.
Compared to the 220 lbs. match, the 285 lbs. finals match was a score-fest. Thirty seconds into the first period Brown scored on a single-leg that left Brown with an arm-bar with which he almost scored nearfall points. Brown rode Campbell well, but was given a warning for stalling with 15 seconds remained. The call irked Brother Martin's coach Robert Dauterive, whose subsequent consternation resulted in a misconduct warning. Brown led 2-0 after the first two minutes. On bottom to start the second period, Brown stood and turned to face Campbell. Campbell tried to bear-hug Brown down but as they hit the mat Brown used underhooks to roll Campbell over to his back. Brown had his feet in bounds, and when Campbell, who was out-of-bounds, rolled out of the hold, Brown had scored two reversal and two nearfall points in all of nine seconds. On the restart Brown actively worked on top to avoid another stalling call. However, he got too aggressive with a cross-face and the match was stopped to award Campbell a point for unsportsmanlike conduct. That point was matched, however, by a subsequent unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on an East Ascension coach, and the period ended with Brown leading 7-2. Campbell took seven seconds to escape from Brown and cut the Crusader's lead to 7-3. After a weak double-leg shot by Campbell, though, Brown just spun behind him for a takedown and a 9-3 lead. That looked easy, so Brown let Campbell up again and the score was 9-4. Campbell, however, had other ideas, and lateral-dropped Brown to Brown's back, although the Crusader recovered before nearfall points could be scored. Campbell let Brown escape but now felt in reach of a win as he was only down 10-6. With 12 seconds remaining, Campbell tried to lateral-drop Brown again. But as often proves the case in late match desperation laterals, Campbell arms slipped, and he fell to his back with Brown on top of him. With one second left, Brown was awarded a fall, as well as the resulting state championship. Brown joined Crusader teammate Daniel Croy as the only two Division I wrestlers to pin all of their opponents.
The remaining places, save one, fell into line as seeded. After pinning Sulphur's Slade Manlief in 2:25 in the consolation semifinals, Roberto Rivero of Grace King, seeded third, pinned fourth-seeded Caleb Jackson of Zachary to place third. Jackson got past Hahnville's D'Quinn Butler in 2:46 to advance to the consolation finals. Hahnville's D'Quinn Butler was seeded sixth, and finished in that place, but not to fifth-seeded Jalen Ben of Chalmette, but to unseeded Slade Manlief of Sulphur who defeated Ben in the second round. (To go with his fifth-place finish, the LWN editor recognizes "Slade Manlief" as the best wrestler name of the tournament.)
