Weight Class Synopsis

Matthew Carrier spent the entire season at 106 lbs. and posted a stalwart 37-4 record.  His losses were to North Desoto's Joshua Sarpy (who suffered a season-ending injury in early January) and Division I opponents Sam Dreuil of Jesuit (the two split matches this season), and to Division I finalists Connor Hoffman of Brother Martin and Jacob Frost of Holy Cross.  Carrier also had a match vs. Shaw third-seeded freshman Ashton Surrency, which he won 4-2.  He also won matches against Cameron Witherwax of St. Louis, Basile's Alex Menier (twice) and Parkway's Joshua Keeler twice.  Sonnier received a first-round bye and followed that with a quarterfinals fall in 0:14 and a 3:34 fall over fourth-seeded Naven Dabria of Belle Chasse in the semifinals.

Live Oak sophomore Clayton Hill spend most of the season at 113 lbs., and only dropped to 106 lbs. for the Greater Baton Rouge Championships (which he won) and for the state tournament.  His 49-7 record included a 16-0 technical fall Surrency, and he went 2-1 vs. St. Amant's Tyree Morris.  His losses were all at 113 lbs.  Two were very close matches with St. Louis' Alex Yokubaitis (11-10) and Runnel's Blake Mateu (13-10).  Later, Brother Martin's Ethan Castex and Yokubaitis both scored technical fall on Hill, and Catholic' Luke Romano defeated him 10-5 at the Louisiana Classic.  Once he dropped to 106 lbs. he was undefeated.  During the season Hill posted wins over Catholic's Hunter Goodson four times, Colten Sonnier of Teurlings Catholic, Cameron Witherwax and Shawn Arnold of Lafayette.  Seeded second, Hill received a first-round bye, scored a fall in 0:27 in the quarterfinals and defeated third-seeded freshman Ashton Surrency of Shaw via a 13-0 major decision to advance to the finals.

Carrier led after the first period of the finals match as he scored a takedown on a head-and-arm toss midway through the period.  Hill's back was exposed, but not enough for nearfall points.  Carrier chose to start the second period standing, but it was Hill gaining the takedown with a fireman's carry attempt that turned into a double-leg.  Hill started and succeeded in a near-side cradle, scoring three nearfall points before Carrier kicked out of it.  Carrier then did a Granby roll, and Hill almost caught the Rebel on his back, but Carrier completed the roll and managed a reversal at the end, leaving Hill a 5-4 lead going into the final period.  Hill chose to start on bottom and stood on the whistle.  As Carrier lifted Hill to bring him back to the mat, Hill broke Carrier's grip and spun behind him for a reversal.  Leading 7-2, Hill went back to the nearside cradle, locking Carrier's head and one leg, and bided his time to ensure he did not lose control as he put Carrier's back to the mat. Hill was awarded the fall in 4:45.

Fifth-seeded Joshua Keeler of Parkway won three matches in the wrestlebacks, including a 6-0 win over Surrency in the consolation semifinals, to advance to the consolation finals.  There he met fourth-seeded Naven Dabria of Belle Chasse, who put Keeler in the wrestlebacks with a 7-6 quarterfinals win. Dabria pinned Northside's Brady Mier in 1:29 to make the consolation finals. This time, in a close 4-2 match, it was Keeler coming out ahead and placing third.  The Shaw freshman Surrency placed fifth with a 4:09 pin of Brady Mier of Northside.
