Weight Class Synopsis

Colten Sonnier of Teurlings Catholic brought a 38-4 record to the state championships which included wins over Luke Romano of Catholic, Peyton Ward and Carter Duet of St. Paul's, Tyree Morris of St. Amant and Blake Menier of Basile.  His losses were to Romano (in the Louisiana Classic consolation finals), Rummel's Blake Mateu, Alex Yokubaitis of St. Louis and Clayton Hill of Live Oak, each of whom would win a third-place, second-place and state title in the respectively in the state championship tournament.  After a first-round bye Sonnier needed only 31 seconds to win his quarterfinals match and 3:55 to defeat North Desoto's Cameron Davis, the fourth seed who Sonnier had previously pinned twice in under 60 seconds, in the semifinals.

Senior Cody McCollister was Shaw's first of three Eagles finalists.  His record was 25-23, but 18 of those losses came from Division I competition, including Caruso Signorelli of Holy Cross, Carter Duet of St. Paul's, Ethan Castex of Brother Martin,  Tyree Morris of St. Amant, and three more from Division II state champions Mateu and Hill.  McCollister may have had a lot of losses, but they were to very good competition.  McCollister scored a 15-0 technical fall in Round-one and a fall in 1:49 in the quarterfinals.  His semifinals match against third-seeded Francisco Castro of Belle Chasse, whom Sonnier defeated 9-2 in the Trey Culotta, was a tough one.  McCollister came out ahead in this one 4-1.

On this day, however, McCollister was no match for the junior Sonnier.  The Rebel wrestler took McCollister down with a single-to-double-leg combination, gained a chicken-wing which opened a half-nelson, and drove it to a fall in 0:56.

Sixth-seeded George Kim of St. Michael needed three matches to make the consolation finals.  His consolation semifinals match was a 7-1 victory over George Kim of St. Michael.  Francisco Castro of Belle Chasse, the third-seed, needed only one, and he pinned Sam Houston's Matthew Bowen in 1:42.  Taking about two minutes longer than he did in the quarterfinals, Castro scored a fall over Kim in 3:59 to place third.  Davis pinned Bowen in 4:27 to place fifth.
