Weight Class Synopsis

A Division II runner-up in 2017, Shaw's Eduardo Garcia put together a very impressive 51-2 season prior to Bossier City, the second-best record at 170 lbs. in the state.  His two losses were to Catholic's Jacob Fereday, who would be a Division I state champion undefeated in Louisiana, and to Holy Cross' Caden Mumme, in a rematch of an earlier 12-10 Sudden Victory win over Mumme.  He defeated Brother Martin's Mason Massicot, St. Paul's Jake Arena and De la Salle's Ryan Hamrick twice apiece and edged soon-to-be three-time Division III state champion Brandon Turner of South Plaquemines 6-5.  Garcia scored a fall in 2:13, a 19-4 technical fall and pinned fourth-seeded Carson Sanders of Parkway in 5:13 to reach his second finals match

William Clay, a Carencro senior, posted a 25-7 record.  All seven of his losses were at 182 lbs. and included the likes of Dane Harter of St. Michael, Jake Arena of St. Paul's and Tyler Irvin of East Ascension. For the state championships he dropped to 170 lbs.  Clay advanced to the finals via a fall in 0:16, a forfeit and two major decisions, one 10-0 and the other, in the semifinals, 17-4 against sixth-seeded Hunter Brooks.

The final match was a very low-scoring affair.  No points were scored in the first period.  In the second round Garcia received a penalty point after Clay was warned and then penalized for stalling.  With 0:02 remaining, Garcia managed an escape to take a 2-0 lead into the last period.  Clay escaped from Garcia after a minute elapsed to make the score 2-1.  With time running out, Clay attempted a weak lateral drop, and when pulling out of it his right knee bent and Garcia pushed him onto his back, threw in a half-nelson and scored a fall with 0:05 remaining.

After his quarterfinal loss to Hunter Brooks of North Desoto, third-seeded James Hood used a major decision and a fall in 2:39 and a consolation semifinals fall in 2:23 over Sanders.  Rayne's unseeded Miles Doucet had a harder road to the consolation finals requiring falls in 0:19, 3:23, 2:18 and a 9-3 consolation semifinals win over Brooks.  The senior Hood defeated the sophomore Doucet 11-8 to place third.  Parkway's Sanders pinned Brooks in 5:21 to place fifth.
