Daniel Monroe was a Division II 195 lbs. state runner-up in 2017, losing his finals match 3-2 to Rayne's Tyler Carriere. This season, he competed at 220 lbs. and posted a pre-state record of 24-1, which included a win over Carriere via an overtime pin in 7:00. His only loss was to the defending Division I state champion from Airline, Matt Salinas. In the Ken Cole finals he defeated Zachary's Wesley Brady 8-6, who later was a runner-up in Division I after a Sudden Victory loss to Jesuit's Perry Ganci. He also defeated Dunham's soon-to-be two-time Division III state champion Robert Rabel. After a first round bye Monroe pinned his opponents in 0:18, 2:27 and 2:30 against fourth-seeded Connor Cloinger of Parkway, to reach his second Division II finals match.
Facing Monroe in the finals was second-seeded junior Kanyn Barton of Sam Houston. Barton had a 30-15 record, and it included a 2-1 record over Braydon Domingue of Teurlings Catholic, who was seeded third. After a first-round bye, Barton scored falls in 1:10 and 3:16 to set-up a potential rematch with Domingue. But that did not happen as Domingue was upset in the quarterfinals by Carencro's Zavione Willis. Barton had pinned Willis twice during the season, and he did so again in 5:11 to reach the finals.
After a minute had elapsed in the first period of the finals Barton tried to lateral-drop Monroe, but Monroe countered with a strong whizzer that put Barton's head on the mat. Monroe was able to spin behind Barton for a takedown and a 2-0 lead, which he held until the period ended. Barton chose to start on top of Monroe at the start of the second period, and the Haughton senior escaped in a mere three seconds. Monroe then scored a single-leg takedown, and later, when Barton tried a sit-out, Monroe pulled him backwards and put him on his back for three nearfall points. Monroe entered the final period with an 8-0 lead. Monroe chose to start the third period in the neutral position, and after a minute he countered a leg-trip attempt by Barton and fell on top of the Mustang junior for his final score of the match, giving him a 10-0 lead. With 30 seconds remaining Barton used a Granby roll for an escape point, but he could not do anything else against Monroe, who won the title via a 10-1 major decision.
Cloinger recovered from his eighth loss to Monroe in the semifinals with a fall in 3:28 Keshon McZeal of Northside to advance to the consolation finals. There he met sixth-seeded Zavione Willis of Carencro, who used a fall in 4:46 over Rayne's Christian Svendsen to meet Cloinger. Cloinger had previously defeated Willis by a fall in 1:56, and this time the Carencro sophomore lasted longer, but still fell in 3:13. The fifth-seeded Svendsen defeated the unseeded McZeal in 1:27 to place fifth.
