Weight Class Synopsis
Teurlings Catholic sophomore Miles Santiago brought a 33-1 record into the
state tournament, losing only to East Ascension's Jordan Campbell in the
Louisiana Classic semifinals, a tournament in which he placed third by defeating
Anthony Ingram of Live Oak. Santiago's
record included two wins over Ingram, the defending Division II state champion,
a 26-second pin of Division I's third-place finisher Roberto Rivero of Grace
King, and two wins over Northwood's fourth-seeded Terrell Ford Kirkendoll.
He scored fall in 1:03 and 2:42 in his first two matches but had a tougher time
in the semifinals with Belle Chasse's Davion Turner, winning 5-2.
Live Oak's Anthony Ingram did not approach the 24-4 record he posted in the
2016-17 season when he won the Division II 220 lbs. championship and 86% of his
matches. He came close to the same percentage at 78%, but his 39 wins were
offset by 11 losses. Two of those were to Santiago, and the others
included Division I's Mack Brown, Jordan Campbell and Donald Paul. He did,
however, breeze into the finals match with pins of 0:48, 0:40 and 1:57 over
unseeded Dezrel Eloph, a Parkway sophomore, in the semifinals. Eloph upset
third-seeded Braden Parker of St. Thomas More 7-2 in the quarterfinals.
The 285 lbs. finals match was a good one. Santiago scored first by
sitting out on an Ingram whizzer and spinning behind Ingram for a two-point
takedown. Ingram escaped with 0:20 remaining and the round ended 2-1 in
favor of Santiago. Starting in the bottom position for the second period,
Santiago could not get away from Ingram, who worked on cradles for the most
part. With 50-seconds remaining Ingram cross-faced Santiago a little
harder than the official felt necessary, and Santiago was awarded a penalty
point. That was the only score in the second period, which ended 3-1 in
favor of Santiago. Ingram escaped after 30-seconds elapsed in the final
period, and after a leg-trip attempt by Santiago went awry, Ingram
lateral-dropped Santiago for a takedown and his first (and only) lead in the
match, 4-3. On the bottom, though, Santiago turned into Ingram and grabbed
an ankle, which led to a double-leg that pushed Ingram back on the mat on his
back, netting Santiago a two-point reversal and three nearfall points to take an
8-4 lead. Ingram turned off of his back, stood-up and then escaped but
time ran out before he could score again, and the Rebel sophomore won his first
state championship 8-5.
Northwood's fourth-seeded Terrell Ford-Kirkendoll, after losing 5-2 in the
quarterfinals to fifth-seeded Davion Turner of Belle Chasse, scored falls in
0:44, 1:37 and 2:59 over Eloph to advance to the consolation finals. There, he faced
Turner again, who advanced there via a fall in 4:21 over the third-seeded Parker. As has happened often in the Division II
consolation finals, Ford-Kirkendoll avenged his previous loss with a fall over
Turner in 3:49 to place third. Parker defeated Eloph 12-10 for fifth-place.
