Church Point senior Jacob Routon had a great season. He posted a record of 22-7 entering the state championships, and his only loss to someone not in Division I or Division II was to Basile's Gavin Christ. He had Trey Fontenot of Parkway, a returning Division II state champion, scoreless and frustrated for 5:45 before giving up a five-point move in the Jacob McMillan finals. But he had a 7-4 win over Brusly's Calep Balcuns in the finals of the Brusly Invitational and was recognized as the #1 seed. He scored three falls to advance to the finals, including a 3:48 fall over fourth-seeded Grant Gebo of De la Salle.
Balcuns was the second seed, but after a first-period fall and a technical fall, he fell to third-seeded Mikey Gordy of Ouachita Christian. Gordy had a 31-8 record, and his only Division III loss was also the Gavin Christ. Gordy followed a first-round bye with a quarterfinals fall in 1:36 and made it to the finals via a 4:25 fall over Balcuns.
Gordy scored the only points of the first period with a lightning-quick fireman's carry at the edge of the mat with 50 seconds remaining. Down 2-0 to start the second period, Routon tried a switch with 1:20 remaining, and it merited the Church Point wrestler an escape point. No more points were scored in the second period and going into the third Gordy held on to a tenuous 2-1 lead. On bottom to start the third period Gordy stood-up and escaped quickly, increasing his lead to 3-1. A little later Gordy executed another fireman's carry that put Routon on his back. Gordy kept him there until he secured a fall in 4:35. Ouachita Christian now had two state champions with two-more top-seeded finalists yet to wrestle.
Balcuns reached the consolation finals via a close 6-3 match with St. Louis' Noah Berryhill. Grant Gebo had an easier role, getting by Basile's Cole Manuel via a 10-2 major decision. Balcuns reasserted himself and placed third via a 14-4 major decision. Berryhill, a junior, defeated the freshman from Brusly, Manuel, by a 13-4 major decision.
