Weight Class Synopsis

At this point, if one has read the Division I 106 lbs. page, and continued reading, in order, the remaining Division I, Division II and Division III pages, Basile junior Gavin Christ's name has been used 26 times on eight pages. And the phrase "over Gavin Christ" or variations of that were not used. That is indicative of a Division III wrestler being the best in the state.

Christ posted 54 wins and no losses in 2017-18, winning every tournament he entered and beating a slew of talented Division I and Division II opponents, including one former Division I state champion twice, a soon-to-be crowned Division I state champion, two defending Division II state champions and a soon-to-be Division II state champion three times. In this event Christ recorded falls in 0:57, 5:18 and 3:40 over Thomas Jefferson's Hung Nguyen in the semifinals. The was the third time he advanced to the finals.

John-Patrick Broussard of St. Louis was seeded third behind Brusly's Matthew Anderson, who was the second seed. They had very similar records. Anderson was 27-9 and Broussard was 20-9. Broussard lost the second seed via a loss to Anderson in the Brusly Invitational due to the five-match rule. Their seeding order did not matter as they would face-off in the semifinals, and Broussard won that match by a fall in 5:00 for the pleasure of meeting Christ in the finals.

Christ scored continuously in the first two periods. He scored on a single-leg shot, a double-leg shot when both wrestlers' bodies ended up out-of-bounds save Christ's feet, and via drop-to-the-mat tilt which netted three nearfall points. Broussard escaped near the end of the first period, but Christ simply executed another double-leg takedown. Christ led 9-2 as the first round ended. Broussard started the second round from the bottom and scored an escape. Christ came back with another double-leg takedown, after which he used a cross-body ride and a cross-face to score another three nearfall points. Broussard escaped again, and the match was 14-4 in Christ's favor as the second period ended. On bottom for the third period Christ quickly escaped and, after missing on a single-leg attempt, went back to a double-leg shot for his last takedown of the match. Christ rode Broussard the rest of the round, which Christ stopping a stand-up by taking Broussard back to the mat in a manner that was deemed "just not cricket" by the officials. The penalty was not intentional, and Broussard showed no ill effects or affectations afterward. Christ now owned three Division III state championships and has one more year to go. He also merited his second Division III Outstanding Wrestler award.

Evan Brouillette of Hannan and Nathan Willis of Lakeside each wrestled three five-minute matches to reach the consolation finals. The semifinals losers, Nguyen and Anderson, did not benefit from their automatic berths into the consolation semifinals. Brouillette defeated Willis 8-3 to place third and Anderson defeated Nguyen 8-0 to place fifth.
