Weight Class Synopsis

Top-seeded Ouachita Christian senior Matthew Webre was the fourth and final Eagle to reach the finals.  He brought a record of 36-7 which included 7-2 and 7-3 decisions, and a fall in 2:22 over his finals opponent, second-seeded Joseph Vincent of St. Louis.  Two of his losses were to out-of-state competition, one was to Robert Christman, who in the match prior to this finals match won the Division III 152 lbs. championship.  Against Division II opponents, his only loss was to defending state champion Martin Garrett of Shaw in a 3-0 match.  Bryson Adams of Division I Covington defeated Webre 6-4, but that was a match held in mid-November.  His other two losses were to Division I 160 lbs. finalist Hunter Hawkins of St. Amant.  One was in the Louisiana Classic consolation finals and the other in the Ken Cole finals.  After a first round bye, Webre used a fall in 1:53, an 18-6 major decision and a 13-3 major decision to reach the finals.

Vincent, also a senior, was 25-10.  His sole Division III loss, aside from the three to Webre, was to Basile's Cameron Berzas in mid-December.  Berzas, however, competed in the Division III 152 lbs. weight class at this event.  Vincent's other losses were to Division I competition, an out-of-state wrestler, and to Garrett of Shaw in a close 8-5 match.  He had a win at the Ken Cole, in which he placed fifth, over the #3 seed Logan David of Basile, and the #5 seed, Austin Moss of Lakeside.  Also at the Ken Cole Vincent defeated a very tough Mataius Lavine of Division II Sam Houston in a 6-4 SV match.  (Lavine placed third in the Division II 160 lbs. weight class.).  Vincent also received a first round bye and followed that with falls in 0:44 and 2:37 to meet David in the semifinals.  Vincent beat David by a 4-3 score at the Ken Cole, but had a slightly easier win this time, advancing to the finals with a 5-1 decision.

Webre started off quickly in the first period with a double-leg takedown in the first 10 seconds.  He rode Vincent for the remainder of the round and took a 2-0 lead into the second two minutes.  On bottom for the start, Webre executed a Granby roll after 30 seconds to reverse Vincent and increase his lead to 4-0.  A little later he let Vincent escape, and with 15 seconds remaining in the round Webre scored another double-leg takedown, increasing his lead to 6-1 after the second period.  With Vincent on bottom to start the final period, the St. Louis senior attempted a switch and was able to at least get an escape out of it to make it a 6-4 match.  The two wrestlers locked-up for a little while until Webre shucked Vincent's head and shoulders and brought him to the mat for another takedown.  He let Vincent escape with a little over a minute remaining.   Down 8-3, Vincent locked-up again and attempted to throw Webre.  But Webre got under the attempted head-and-arm grasp and slipped behind Vincent to score the final two points in a 10-3 win.

After losses in the semifinals, David and Moss pinned their next opponents in under 3:00 to contest for third place.  In their first meeting and only meeting, as Moss is a senior, David prevailed 5-2.  Two unseeded wrestlers, Anthony Gaspard of Kaplan and Tyrin Hoover of North Vermillion, met to decide who would place fifth.  In three previous matches, Hoover won via a fall, Gaspard won 7-1 and then Hoover again won with a pin.  It was Gaspard's turn to win this time, which he did with a 13-5 major decision.
