Ten Louisiana wrestlers started the 2018 USMC/USWA Cadet Freestyle Nationals on Saturday. Three of them, Jake Houser, Alex Ramirez and Camdyn Ingram, will return to compete on Sunday. Each lost to a current quarterfinalist.
To get it over with first: six of the Team Louisiana wrestlers went 0-2 on Saturday, and they are better wrestlers now than had they gone 0-0 (i.e., did not participate at all). Competing against out-of-state competition, the experience of wrestling in the most prestigious high school freestyle tournament of the year, getting to see Fargo, North Dakota and individually playing a large roll in the economy of the Midwest metropolis just at the concession stand, All add up to making them better wrestlers come the 2017-18 LHSAA folkstyle season. Jesuit's Luke Battaglia came away the best out of that group as he won his first consolation round match 8-7 against a Nebraska opponent.
Houser, who competes for St. Paul's, lost his only match of the day 10 to J. Volk of Minnesota and, due to the smaller size of the 88 lbs. bracket, will not wrestle his first consolation match until Sunday. Volk advanced to Sunday's quarterfinals.
Wrestling at 138 lbs. Rummel's Jacob Ramirez was the only Team Louisiana member to win a championship round match, defeating Colorado's A. Green 4-0 following a first round bye. His championship round win garnered Ramirez another bye in the consolation bracket, after which he won two matches via scores of 20-8 and 10-0. On Sunday Ramirez will face Pennsylvania's J. Hogan in the second consolation round of 16. Texas' C. Warden, who knocked Ramirez out of the championship bracket, wrestles in Sunday's quarterfinals.
Live Oak's Camdyn Ingram lost his first match at 152 lbs. to Ohio's N. Inboden via a 17-14 affair. Ingram then, after a first round bye. ran-off four consecutive wins via a pin in 40 seconds, two 10-0 technical falls and a 19-8 technical fall. He will face New York's T. DeSena on Sunday in the second consolation round of 16. Inboden advanced to Sunday's quarterfinals.
