The St. Paul's Wolves dominated Jesuit in the Blue Jays' gym on Wednesday,
November 14th, winning 54-21.
Jesuit's Anthony Rosevalley won by decision at 106 pounds giving Jesuit a
initial 3-0 lead. Then some veteran Wolves ran-off five consecutive
falls for a 30-3 lead. The Blue Jays did win three more matches by Colby
Queyrouze, Parker Williams, Darren Ferrier and Jack Grady, but only two of those
matches were won by falls. The five consecutive St. Paul's falls were
scored by Michael Rader, Connor Oviedo, Carter Duet, Brandon Stein and Peyton
Ward. Later the Ulfers twins, Evan and Cole, also won by falls, as did Ben
Bobrowski in the evening's last match.
Granted, Jesuit two-time state champion Perry Ganci was not present as Jesuit
was still in the Division I football playoffs. That also applied to
seniors Jacob Kief, Ashton Stevens (both of whom competed in the 2018 state
championships) and, if Cyril and Owen Melville are one and the same person, to
him. Additionally, 2018 runner-up Luke Eccles was not cleared to wrestle
due to hydration testing.
St. Paul's, on the other hand, with a stellar line-up from 113 pounds to 138
pounds, may be looking for the runner-up spot. And East Ascension does not
have a "lock" on brothers, as twins Evan and Cole Ulfers each have 4-1 records.
Holy Cross may be favored to place behind the Brother Martin Crusaders, and the
two Ulfers brothers' only losses came from Holy Cross opponents, but the 113-138
Wolves line-up will be tough on everyone. More can be learned about those
to on November 27th when the Wolves visit the Tigers for a dual meet.
St. Paul's might have been missing some football players, as they lost to the
Blue Jays on November 10th. It is possible that St. Paul's had some
wrestlers on their football team, and they might have been given a week or two
after football completed to rest-up for a little while before starting wrestling
practices.
This may be the year Jesuit needs to rebuild. As such, even with the 20
points they seem to get from just weighing in at a state championship, their
streak of winning six team runner-up titles is in jeopardy. The Blue Jays
may have to work to place in the top-five at the 2019 state championships.
St. Paul's, Holy Cross, Baton Rouge Catholic and a few public schools, such as
St. Amant and East Ascension, may be competing for the second through fifth
places. But it is early in the season, so such premature predictions are,
well, premature.
