Basile nips St, Louis for the Brusly Division III Invitational Menier, Christ, Cortez and Duplechin win titles for the Bearcats |
January 13, 2019 | Written by: Editor |
The Basile Bearcats had four champions and six other top-four placers to score 198 points to win the Brusly Invitational by eight points over St. Louis. The Saints had three champions and six top-four placers.
Despite the Bearcats' win in this event, there is no clear-cut favorite between Basile and St. Louis. The edge leans toward Basile, though. The Saints entered 13 wrestlers while the Bearcats only had 12, and in the five head-to-head matches between scoring wrestlers for the two teams, Basile won all five. But come the state championships in Division III, it is anyone's guess as to what weight classes the coaches may put their wrestlers in order to give their team a better chance. Many of the better wrestlers may move up a weight class, or even two, leaving open spots for wrestlers who will not have to lose much or any weight for the event, and thus should be stronger. (Trevor Schermer of Brusly wrestled the better tournaments in the 2013-14 season at 138 lbs., whereas at the Division III state championships he competed at 152 lbs.) At the Jacob McMillan Memorial, Basile placed fourth with 117 points, while St. Louis placed seventh with only 77 points. The Saints, though, entered 12 wrestlers while the Bearcats entered only nine.
If the Bearcats can fill all 14 weight classes and the newer wrestlers win only one or two matches, Basile may be tough to beat. If Logan David can return for the state championships, his presence could very well "seal the deal" for the Bearcats. Then, again, come the state tournament, an upset "here or there" may make a tremendous difference when the Brother Melchior trophies are awarded.
The other Bearcat champions were Alex Menier and Gavin Christ, both defending Division III state champions. St. Louis' champions were Alex Yokubaitus, John-Patrick Broussard and William Jicks.
