Weight Class Synopsis

A runner-up in 2018, Brother Martin junior Mason Massicot had a fantastic 2018-19 season.  He went 22-0 against Louisiana competition.  He won the Mandeville Open, the Trey Culotta Invitational, the Prep Slam, the Louisiana Classic and the Catholic League District Championships.  Before the state championships he had already defeated second-seeded Mason Macaluso of Holy Cross and third seed Allen Mire of Hahnville.  Massicot had three close matches all season.  He was threatened by Zachary's Austin Landry in the quarterfinals of the Louisiana Classic.  In the finals of that event he won a 5-4 match over Carencro's Taylor Clay.  His closest match, though, was a week before the Louisiana Classic when he required a Sudden Victory round to defeat Evan Ulfers of St. Paul's.  En route to the finals he scored a first-round fall in 1:00, received a forfeit, then pinned John Ehret's Alvin Diggs in 1:35 in the quarterfinals.  Catholic's fifth-seeded Ian Wyble met Massicot in the semifinals but also fell via a fall, this time in 5:07.

Holy Cross senior Mason Macaluso was expected to meet Massicot in the finals, but he did not make it to the semifinals.  In the quarterfinals Macaluso was called for an illegal slam of East Ascension's Reginald Barnes, and he was disqualified from that match.  Obeying his seeding, #3 Allen Mire of Hahnville scored falls in the first and second rounds, and beat Fontainebleau's William Broussard in the semifinals.  Mire had previously defeated Barnes by a 14-5 major decision, and in the semifinals he scored another major decision, 16-7, for the right to meet Massicot in the finals.

Finals

(1) Mason Massicot of Brother Martin pinned (3) Allen Mire of Hahnville in 1:32
The only takedown of the match started after 1:34 had elapsed.  It was finally awarded to Massicot after 21 more seconds.  Massicot sprawled on a double-leg attempt by Mire.  As Mire got to his feet, Massicot clamped down on Mire's head and shoulder. As Mire tried to raise his head up, Massicot let him go and dove in for a single-let shot which he changed into a double.  Mire sprawled well, but Massicot lifted stayed underneath him and rose up on his knees getting between Mire's legs.  Massicot attempted to put one of Mire's legs over his head, but the Hahnville wrestler still resisted and Massicot resorted to grabbing and lifting one leg.  From there he was able to unbalance Mire and take him to the mat for two points.  After a restart, Massicot used a tight-waist to break Mire down, and then worked a single chicken-wing.  Mire resisted that, but Massicot was able to catch Mire's right arm and bring it behind the Hahnville wrestler's back.  From there, Massicot put in another chicken-wing with his left arm, started turning Mire over and sunk a half-nelson hold on Mire's head, turning Mire to his back and scoring a fall in 1:32.  Massicot scored the first of three falls in Division I.
