In his first state championship appearance, North Desoto's Joshua Sarpy proved he is one of the best with a 9-0 shutout of Shaw's Raheem Bonnet |
* Louisiana opponents only, not including any types of forfeits, byes or junior varsity events.
Much like the 106 lbs. weight class, only two wrestlers were considered main contenders for the finals at 113 lbs.
A lot of south Louisiana wrestlers and fans learned that Joshua Sarpy was not a mythical demon of North Desoto folklore, but an actual wrestler who sustained injuries prior to the state championships in 2017 and 2018. Well, the "demon" part could be construed by some based on his performance at the Louisiana Classic in which he defeated Brother Martin's Ethan Castex and Alex Yokubaitis of St. Louis before falling only 2-0 to Division I state champion Jacob Frost of Holy Cross. (That was Frost's smallest margin of victory over the entire season.)
Before the state championships Shaw junior Raheem Bonnet had wrestled in 57 matches. Only five of those were losses, and they came from very good wrestlers: Division II state champion Clayton Hill, Brother Martin's Chase Scott (Division I fourth-place), Connor Oviedo of St. Paul's (Division I third-place), Matthew Carrier of Teurlings Catholic (who would have fared well at the state championships were he not injured at the Louisiana Classic) and Division I runner-up Ethan Castex of Brother Martin.
Sarpy did not wrestle a match in Louisiana until the Lone Survivor tournament on December 28th. He won event that over Carrier in the finals. He also won two tournaments in Texas and one in Arkansas before the Louisiana Classic, in which he placed second. After that he won the NWLA Regionals. Sarpy received a forfeit in the first-round, a 1:00 fall in the quarterfinals and a fall in 3:06 over fourth-seeded Cameron Selmon of St. Michael in the semifinals.
Bonnet started the season at 24-0. He won the Warrior Open, the Mandeville Open, the Live Oak 8, the Spartan Invitational (over Division I third-placer Sergio Maldonado of Bonnabel). He won the Bruin Invitational and had a dual meet win over Brother martin's Chase Scott. He finished third at the Trey Culotta over Carrier and third at the Catholic League District championships. His path to the finals included a round-one pin in 1:13, a 9-0 Major Decision in the quarterfinals and a 6-0 decision over Parkway's third-seeded Jordan Clark.

(1) Joshua Sarpy of North Desoto defeated Raheem Bonnet of Shaw via a 9-0 Major Decision | |||||||||||
Sarpy started the action with a single-leg shot
from which he was able to lift high, but the two scampered out of bounds
before any points were scored. Ten seconds later Bonnet attempted
a double-leg shot, but Sarpy caught him in an over-and-under position,
raised Bonnet up and then lateral-dropped him for a takedown and two
nearfall points. Sarpy rode-out the remainder of the first period
with a single leg cross-body ride, stopping several good attempts by
Bonnet to reach behind and pull Sarpy off of his back. Sarpy led
4-0 after the first period. Bonnet won the toss to start the second period and deferred the choice to Sarpy who chose to start on the bottom. Sarpy did all types of things on the bottom, turning in to face Bonnet, grabbing and pulling Bonnet's legs, trying to roll Bonnet, but the Shaw wrestler stuck to him and would not allow him to score. Bonnet did get one of Sarpy's arms across his back when Sarpy was flattened-out, but he could not turn Sarpy over. The third period started with Sarpy ahead 4-0 and Bonnet decided to start in the neutral position. The two locked-up early and Sarpy lateral-dropped Bonnet, but out of bounds so no points resulted. With 1:40 remaining Sarpy shot a deep single and put his leg behind Bonnet's uplifted one. Sarpy used his leg to lift Bonnet's leg and used his upper body to push Bonnet back and force him to the mat for a takedown and a 6-0 lead. Bonnet backed into a Sarpy cross-body ride and almost reversed Sarpy, but the North Desoto wrestler cross-faced him back to the mat. Still riding a leg, when Bonnet tried to stand up on Sarpy, Sarpy grabbed a leg from the inside and rolled Bonnet to his back in a spladle with 30 seconds remaining. Bonnet got out of the pinning combination with about 15 seconds remaining, but Sarpy received three nearfall points and still had the leg-ride in, which he used to rotate out of a couple of possible reverses. On the last one Sarpy came close to putting Bonnet in a crucifix but before that happened the match ended. Sarpy became North Desoto's third state champion, following Richard Mack, III, in 2018 and Chase Bates in 2017. |
