Weight Class Synopsis

Yet again, this was a weight class in which only two wrestlers were considered state championship material.

Live Oak junior Clayton Hill, a 2018 state champion, provided a fun season for wrestling fans.  He had help, however, from St. Amant's Corey Brownell, also a junior.  The two met eight times during the season, with each winning four matches.  Of his seven losses prior to the state championships, four were to Brownell, two were from Defending state champions Connor Hoffman of Brother Martin and Alex Yokubaitis of St. Louis.  His remaining loss was to Parkway senior Trey Fontenot, 10-2 MD, in the semifinals of the Ken Cole.  During the season Hill won the Brusly 8, the Spartan Invitational, the South Walton Border Wars, the Scott Rohrer Hoover Invitational, the Louisiana Classic and the Greater Baton Rouge Championships.  Along the way he defeated foes like, well, Brownell, of course, but also Shaw's Division II runner-up Raheem Bonnet, Division I state champion Logan Bertot of Brother Martin, Division I fourth-placer Brandon Stein of St. Paul's and defending Division I state champion Luke Romano.  However, due to the loss to Fontenot, Hill was the second-seed at the state championships.

Parkway senior Trey Fontenot had a very tough season last year for many, many reasons.  A state champion in 2017, he can be proud that after all he went through in his junior year that he placed fourth.  But that did not sit well with Fontenot, so  he went A.F.O. all season.  (For those who do not know what "A.F.O." means, ask someone else, please.)  During the 2018-19 season all Fontenot lost was 12 pounds.  He started at 132 lbs., wrestled at 126 lbs. once, and after the Trey Culotta went down to 120 lbs. for the rest of the season.  Fontenot won the Riot on the Red, the R.L. Turner tournament in Texas, the Jacob McMillan, the Lone Survivor, the Ken Cole, the Gator Brawl in Florida and the NWLA Regionals.  In his victory swath lay Byrd's Demetri Teddie, Airline Division I runner-up Peyton Bass, defending Division II state champion Colten Sonnier of Teurlings Catholic (twice) and the one match in the Ken Cole over Hill.

Fontenot's path to the finals included a first-round bye, a quarterfinals pin in 0:11 and an 8-4 semifinals decision over fourth-seeded Francisco Castro of Belle Chasse.

Hill reached the finals for the second consecutive year via a first-round bye, a quarterfinals pin in 1:01 and a semifinals pin in 1:32 over sixth-seeded Isaac Suarez of Rummel, who previously defeated the third seed, St. Michael's George Kim, in the quarterfinals.

Finals

(1) Trey Fontenot of Parkway defeated (2) Clayton Hill of Live Oak via a 13-4 Major Decision
The defending Lie Oak champion Hill immediately grabbed Fontenot's right leg and was able to elevate it, but Fontenot kept his balance on his other leg and when Hill to try to trip him the two went out-of-bounds.  With 50 seconds remaining Fontenot tried a high-crotch but Hill stopped it for a moment until Fontenot, still holding on to an arm, pulled Hill's arm down hard, and pulled Hill's leg like a small fireman's carry to score the matches first two points.  Fontenot rode Hill for the remainder of the first period.

Winning the toss to start the second period on the bottom with a 2-0 lead, Fontenot immediately sat-out and turned while getting ahold of one of Hill's legs.  Fontenot held the leg until he could get both of his hands on it.  Then he stood-up with it and tripped Hill to the mat for a reversal, increasing his lead to 4-0.  Hill tried stand-ups, sit-outs and catching Fontenot's leg when Fontenot inserted a cross-body ride, but none would free him from Fontenot's grasp.  Fontenot caught Hill on his side while using the cross-body ride, and he cranked Hill's arm and neck until two nearfall counts were scored and the second period ended.  Fontenot was no enjoying a 6-0 lead.

Hill decided to start the third period neutral, as he needed a pretty big score to get himself back into the match.  The strategy paid off a little as Hill grabbed and elevated Fontenot's right leg, and when Fontenot tried to spin his body to loosen Hill's grip, Hill followed Fontenot to the mat for his first takedown, making it a 6-2 match.  After a restart with 1:25 remaining Fontenot sat-out and turned a bit, and Hill though he saw an opportunity for a cradle.  But he was riding a little high, so Fontenot just let Hill slide off of Fontenot's back to score a reversal, regaining his six-point lead, 8-2.  As Hill slid Fontenot held his leg and then reached around for Hill's head, and he initiated a cradle that worked with 35 seconds remaining.  With 20 seconds remaining Hill managed to get the two combatants out-of-bounds, but with three more nearfall points giving Fontenot an 11-2 lead, Hill needed a miracle.  And that did not happen.  On the restart Hill used a Granby roll to reverse Fontenot, cutting the lead to 11-4.  Hill let Fontenot escape when someone noticed the clock had not started.  The officials said there were five seconds remaining, but a Live Oak coach insisted there were 10 seconds left, and when all was said and done five seconds remained on the clock and Fontenot was awarded a point for a Live Oak coach's misconduct.  When those seconds slipped away, Fontenot scored a 13-4 Major Decision and regained the championship he lost a year before.
