Darryl Nicholas' win over Colten Sonnier of Teurlings Catholic gave the Panthers consecutive state championships. |
* Louisiana opponents only, not including any types of forfeits, byes or junior varsity events.
This weight class had more than its share of potential finalists. Seeded in the top spot was Shaw's Ashton Surrency. His tournament finishes were first at the Warrior Open, the Live Oak 8, the Billy Duplessis Invitational and the Bruin Invitational. He placed second at the Mandeville Open (losing to Division I state champion Logan Bertot of Brother Martin), the Spartan Invitational (losing to Comeaux's Hunter Broussard, who was untouchable in his first 22 matches), and third at the Trey Culotta Invitational, losing to Brandon Stein of St. Paul's in the pool rounds, to Bertot in the semifinals, and then defeating Stein for third. He was 1-1 with Carter Duet of St. Paul's and defeated Catholic's defending Division I state champion Luke Romano. His remaining two losses were to defending Division I state champion Michael Lundin of Holy Cross. Of the top eight seeds he had defeated #5 Logan Bock of Rummel and #7 Jordan Chenevert of Live Oak.
Second-seeded Darryl Nicholas of Parkway won the Riot on the Red and placed second in the Jacob McMillan Memorial (Broussard), the Trey Culotta Invitational (Bertot), the Lone Survivor (losing to Division I runner-up Peyton Bass of Airline) and the NWLA Regionals (Bass). Nicholas had wins over Romano, Stein, Division III state champion Blake Menier and sixth-seeded Lance Ferguson of North Desoto.
Sasha Robertson of Ben Franklin had a good season for a sophomore. Eleven of his 12 losses prior to the state championships came from Division I opponents.
Fourth-seeded Colten Sonnier of Teurlings Catholic was a defending Division II state champion, but wrestled the vast majority of his matches at 120 lbs. Sonnier won the Dale Ketelsen Memorial and the Lafayette Metro tournament. He placed second at the Jacob McMillan Memorial (losing to Alex Yokubaitis of St. Louis), at the Lone Survivor (losing to Parkway's Trey Fontenot) and at the Ken Cole (Fontenot). He placed fifth at the Louisiana Classic beating Romano, although he lost matches to Bertot and Stein.
Surrency, however, was upset in the quarterfinals by Clay, who pinned him with a cross-face cradle in the second period. He did avenge that loss with a 5-3 decision over Clay in the consolation finals.
In the semifinals, though, Sonnier got past the red-hot Clay 3-1 to advance to his second Division II finals. Prior to that he scored a first-round fall in 0:27 and won a close quarterfinals match 3-1.
Nicholas had a first-round bye and then scored a 7-4 quarterfinals win. In the semifinals he pinned Robertson in 3:37.

After a couple of missed
shots by both wrestlers, after 50 seconds had elapsed the defending
state champion Sonnier shot a single-leg that Nicholas countered by
flipping down and out of it to wind-up with Sonnier's leg.
Sonnier, though, countered with a whizzer and, since he already had a
leg inserted, pulled his arm out of the whizzer and around Nicholas'
back to score the first takedown of the match 20 seconds after his shot.
From that point Sonnier rode-out the remaining 50 seconds of the first
period and led 2-0 Sonnier won the toss but deferred to Nicholas who chose to start in the bottom position. Nicholas stood-up on the whistle, turned to face Sonnier and had an escape before three seconds had passed. On a restart with 1:35 remaining, Sonnier took another shot, but Nicholas extended his leg away from Sonnier's grasp, forcing the Rebel wrestler to overextend himself which allowed Nicholas to spin behind him for the Parkway wrestler's first takedown and his first lead at 3-2. Sonnier came close to escaping when he stood up while Nicholas had a leg and tried flipping down himself, but Nicholas held on steadfastly. The period ended with Nicholas ahead 3-2. On the bottom for the start of the third period, Sonnier tried several sit-outs but could not get away from Nicholas. With 16 seconds remaining Nicholas was warned for stalling and the match was stopped. After the restart Nicholas was cited for a full-nelson and Sonnier was awarded a penalty point which tied the match. Sonnier had eight seconds to escape for a win, but Nicholas prevented that with a claw-ride, and the match went into a Sudden Victory round. After 12 seconds in the Sudden Victory round Nicholas caught Sonnier leaning forward a little much and snapped Sonnier's head and wrist to the mat. From that point it was simple for Nicholas to spin behind Sonnier, and Parkway had its second state champion of the evening via a 5-3 Sudden Victory win. Sonnier deserves a lot of credit to make the match that interesting. During the season he had only wrestled at 126 lbs. three times, and all of those matches were in November. After teammate Matthew Carrier was injured at the Louisiana Classic, he wanted to compete at 113 lbs. At 120 lbs. he had already lost to Fontenot and Hill, so his coaches deemed his best shot for the team was at 126 lbs. As a fourth-seed, he exceeded everyone's expectations. |
