Weight Class Synopsis

The Carencro sophomore Kendrall Williams seemed to come out of nowhere this season.  He went 2-2 in the 2018 state championships but did not place.  This season he lost all of two matches, one to Division III runner-up Haven Dominguez of Church Point and Division I runner-up Hunter Hawkins from St. Amant.  He later avenged the loss to Dominguez.  He had a win due to an injury to second-seeded Carson Sanders of Parkway, and while the LWN does not count such matches the LHSAA does.  Sander had a win over third-seeded Vaughn Romero of Teurlings Catholic, who had a win over fourth-seeded Andrew Gonzales of North Desoto.

Williams won the Lafayette Metro and placed third in the Ken Cole and the Louisiana Classic.  His "quality wins" included victories over Covington's Christopher Allen, Evan Ulfers of St. Paul's and Darien Batiste of Zachary.  Williams reached the finals via a round-one pin in 0:52, a round-two pin in 1:01, a quarterfinals pin in 1:32 and a semifinals pin over Cook in 1:01.

Sanders won the Riot on the Red, the Lone Survivor and the NWLA Regionals.  He placed second at the Jacob McMillan Memorial and fourth at the Trey Culotta.  He had a much tougher road to the finals than did Williams.  He did receive a bye in round-one and pinned his round-two opponent in 0:21.  Then he won a close 6-2 quarterfinals match and scored an 8-2 semifinals win over Romero.

Finals

(1) Kendrall Williams of Carencro pinned (2) Carson Sanders of Parkway 8-2
Not much happened in the first period aside from the two finalists feeling each other out.  Williams tried three fairly weak double-leg shots, and Sanders either stood his ground forcing Williams to lock-p with him again, although once Sanders tried an over-and-under throw, but that went out of bounds.  Near the end Sanders tried a single-legs while sliding to Williams' side, but nothing came from that, either.  The first period ended in a 0-0 tie.

Sanders won the toss and opted for the bottom position.  Sanders started with a Granby roll, but Williams caught him on his back and quickly scored three nearfall points.  After Sanders got out of that predicament, he stood-up and turned to face Williams, but Williams still maintained control.  Sanders tried a head-and-arm throw, but Williams was able to slip his head out of Sanders' grip and the two hit the mat again.  With 47 seconds remaining Williams was warned for stalling and the wrestling was stopped.  On the restart, Sanders made the mistake of having his hips up but his head down on the mat.  Williams then used a bar-arm and a half-nelson to turn Sanders over and score a fall in 1:33.
