Weight Class Synopsis
In his 26 matches during the 2018-19 season Sam
Houston's Mataius Lavine lost two to two-time Division III state champion Isaac
Cortez of Basile and to Division III runner-up Chase Spooner of South
Beauregard. His wins included matches over Division III runner-up Haven
Dominguez, Division I placer Jeremiah Brooks of Acadiana, Division II
third-place winner Austin Cook of Live Oak and Division III third-place winner
William Maze of St. Louis. Second-seeded Miles Doucet of Rayne had
defeated both third-seeded Noah Garza of Teurlings Catholic and the
fourth-seeded Cook. Fifth-seeded Garrett Trimm had defeated sixth-seeded
Terrence Murray of Parkway. Hence, the seeding was flawless.
Lavine won the Jacob McMillan Memorial and the Lone
Survivor and placed second in the Ken Cole. To reach the finals he pinned
his first-round opponent in 0:52, his second-round foe in 1:01, his
quarterfinals match in 1:32 and he pinned the fourth-seeded Cook in 1:01 in the
semifinals.
Doucet won the Rayne Invitational and the Lafayette
Metro tournaments. He placed 5th in the Ken Cole and ninth in the Trey
Culotta. He received a first-round bye, won his second-round match in 10
seconds, pinned his quarterfinals opponent in 0:59 and then pinned the
sixth-seeded Murray, who previously defeated Garza 6-5, in a semifinals match
that lasted 1:12.

Finals
(1) Mataius Lavine of Sam Houston
defeated (2) Miles Doucet of Rayne 19-12 |
Lavin started the scoring
with a quick single-leg shot and trip after the first 10 seconds.
Doucet escaped after the next 10 seconds but before Doucet could get
"set" Lavine used a fireman's carry to get under Doucet and switched it
to a double-leg to score another takedown. This takedown, however,
included Lavine lifting Doucet off of the mat and placing him on his
back meriting three nearfall points. Doucet freed himself from the
pinning combination with 1:20 remaining and 15 seconds later he faced
Lavine and escaped. Again, Lavine immediately attacked again with
a lateral drop that did not put Doucet on his back, but which did give
Lavine the opportunity to grab one leg and the other ankle at Doucet
tried to get out of bounds. Lavine's feet were within the circle
and he was awarded another takedown. On the restart Doucet
stood-up and Lavine tried to grab his head but missed. Doucet just
stood over a kneeling Lavine and jumped on top for a reversal.
Having not been on the bottom yet, Lavine was cautioned for stalling
with 15 seconds remaining and as time ran out Lavine enjoyed a 9-4 lead.
Doucet won the toss and chose to start on top of Lavine. On the
whistle Lavine tried a switch which, though he did not complete it,
allowed him to grab one of Doucet's legs. Lavine tried resorting
to a double-leg, but Doucet reacted with a strong whizzer and as the two
of them stood up Lavine earned an escape. This time it was Doucet
taking no time off by attempting a head-and-arm throw, but Lavine rolled
through it for a reversal. Trying to force a bar-arm nelson,
Lavine ended-up too far to Doucet's side, and Doucet backed up just a
little to find an opening to get back on top of Lavine for a reversal.
Simply lying prone on the mat, Lavine was cited again for stalling with
little over a minute remaining, resulting in a penalty point for Doucet.
With 40 seconds remain Lavine was on his knees to the side of Doucet,
who was riding a tad high, and Lavine used a Peterson roll to score a
reversal and put Doucet on his back. Doucet got out of the
position with 30 seconds remaining, but not fast enough to prevent
Lavine from scoring three more nearfall points. Lavine rode-out
Doucet for the remainder of the period, and the third period would start
with Laving leading 17-7.
Lavine chose to start the final period on the bottom. After 12
seconds Lavine was cited for stalling again and Doucet was awarded
another penalty point, making the match score 17-8. Lavine could
only afford one more stalling citation, which would give Doucet two
penalty points - a stalling call after that would results in Lavine's
disqualification. That fact got Lavine's attention and as he
raised his body up from the neutral position, Doucet tried inserting a
crab-ride but was too high. Lavine ended-up with a single-leg that
he lifted prior to tripping Doucet again for another takedown. At
1:09 Lavine tried a weak nearside cradle but could not hold onto
Doucet's leg. Doucet stood-up but Lavine was obviously exhausted
and was laying his head down on the mat, so Doucet jumped behind him for
a reversal. Doucet inserted a leg and broke-down Lavine and was
able to maintain control when the two started rolling and moving in a
flurry for about five seconds. With 20 seconds remaining Doucet
got a crab-ride behind Lavine, pulled him back to the mat and cross-face
him to expose his should enough to score two nearfall points. But
those were the last points scored, and Lavine won the title in a 19-12
decision. |
