Brusly's Kaden Gillikin and Church Point's Timothy Routon were clearly the two top seeds in this weight class. And while Routon's record may have looked better, it did include a loss to a Division III wrestler, whereas Gillikin's did not. Routon also had three losses to Division II opponents to only one for Gillikin. Basile needed a 106 lbs. entrant, and the eighth-grader Johnson had done very well during the season but did have a loss to Routon. That was the only match Routon had versus the top-six placers at 106 lbs. Gillikin had not faced any of them.
Gillikin placed third at the Brusly 8, fourth at the Rummel 8 and had a respectable record of 2-2 at the Ken Cole. His path to the Division III finals included a first-round bye, a 4:36 fall in the quarterfinals and a 9-2 semifinals win over fourth-seeded Jason Schexnaidre of De la Salle.
Routon won the Brusly Invitational (Gillikin did not enter that event) over Basile's Luc Johnson 10-5 and he placed fourth at the Rayne Invitational. He used a first-round fall in 1:18 and a quarterfinals fall in 1:38 for a rematch with Johnson. The eighth-grader from Basile fared better than in their first meeting, but Routon prevailed 9-5.

The two finalists grappled with each other's upper bodies for the first minute. Then Routon tried a double-leg shot and when he could not lift Gillikin, he ducked under him stead to score the first takedown. The Church Point sophomore rode-out the remaining time to lead 2-0 going into the second period. Routon won the toss and deferred to Gillikin who elected to start on the bottom. After about 50 seconds Gillikin managed to stand-up and get away for an escape point, but that led to a flurry of points for Routon. Gillikin took a high single-leg and tried to start a cradle forcing Routon's head down. But as the two fell to the mat Routon rolled over Gillikin, caught him in an over-under and planted Gillikin on his back. Routon scored three nearfall points and now held a 7-1 lead. Routon chose the bottom position to start the final period and after 40 seconds sat-out and turned, catching enough of Gillikin's head to score and escape. Gillikin stopped a deep single-leg by Routon and, after a struggle, was able to spin behind Routon for two points. Trailing 8-3, the Panther had no recourse but to let Routon escape and attempt another takedown. He got it by shooting for and then collapsing Routon's leg, which almost put the Bear wrestler on his back, but Routon flattened out before that could happen. With only 10 seconds remaining, Gillikin did not have the time to use the takedown-escape-takedown strategy to catch Routon, and the match ended 9-5, giving Church Point its first state champion. | ||||||||||||||||||
