Weight Class Synopsis
Without going through each step of the seeding criteria
it is hard to tell why Hunter Langley of Basile and Andrew Trahan of Brusly were
seeded first or second over the other. Each had two losses to Division III
opponents. In common was Ouachita Christian's Mikey Gordy, to whom Langley
lost 9-2 while Trahan lost by a fall may have been the difference.
Langley's runner-up finish at the Brusly Invitational, in which Trahan did not
place, should not have mattered as much as Langley and Trahan were in different
weight classes. It did not appear anyone else were legitimate contenders
for those two spots, except for Dunham's Evan Light. Light had six
Division III losses, but two were to Basile's Gavin Christ, which should not be
counted against him (criteria dictates it does, though). He had two losses
to Brendon Wilcox of John Curtis, but those were at 138 lbs. The senior
from Dunham would make his place known by the end, however.
Langley did not win any tournaments this season, but he
did place second in the Jacob McMillan Memorial, the Brusly Invitational and the
Rayne Invitational, and sixth at the Ken Cole. He advanced to the finals
via a first-round bye, a second-round fall in 1:53, a quarterfinals pin in 1:53
and a nail-biting 3-1 win in the semifinals over Light.
Trahan did not win any Louisiana tournaments either, but
placed second in the Raider 8, the Brusly 8 and the Greater Baton Rouge
Championships. He placed third at the Zachary Big Horse. Trahan also
received a first-round bye, a second-round fall in 0:37, and 3:25 fall in the
quarterfinals and a 4:41 fall over third-seeded Tanner Foreman of St. Louis in
4:41.

Finals
(2) Andrew Trahan of Brusly pinned (1)
Hunter Langley of Basile in 2:42 |
Trahan scored first with
a strong head shuck that allowed him to get behind Langley and bring him
to the mat after 25 seconds had elapsed in the first period.
Langley used a stand-up to escape with 30 seconds remaining and then
five seconds later scored on Trahan with a deep double-leg takedown.
Trahan escaped with five seconds remaining and the first period ended
with the two tied 3-3. Langley won the toss but deferred to Trahan
who chose to start on bottom. Langley stood up, turned slightly
into Langley to grab a head and arm and brought Langley down to the mat
for a two-point reversal and a three-point nearfall, taking an 8-3 lead
before the action was stopped due to Langley's mouth being covered via
the pinning combination. From the restart Trahan grabbed Langley's
right hand and was able to lift it straight up, opening up a half-nelson
upon which Trahan pounced. Trahan used a leg to prohibit Langley
from rolling out of the hold and a fall was counted at 2:42. |
