Hannan senior Deionisio Talbot had a stellar season. He won the Brusly Invitational and the St. Tammany Parish Championships. He placed third at the Jacob McMillan Memorial, barely losing to Teurlings Catholic's Carlos Travasos 9-7 in Sudden Victory. His other two losses were to Division I opponents, and were at 160 lbs. Talbot reached the finals with a first-round fall in 0:59, a second-round fall in 1:27 and a semifinals 15-4 Major Decision over Basile's Ethan Bazinet.
Kaplan junior Nathan Sistrunk also had a good season. He won the Rayne Invitational and the Lafayette Metro, placed fourth at the Brusly Invitational (at 160 lbs.) and went 4-2 at the Ken Cole. His only two losses at 152 lbs. were to Division II wrestlers Travasos and Shad Sheffie of St. Michael, both of whom placed in the top-five in Division II. Sistrunk had a first-round bye, defeated Notre Dame's Brad Boulet 10-6 in the quarterfinals and eked out a tough 5-4 win over St. Louis' John Reina 6-5.

Talbot scored first with a double-leg takedown in the first 15 seconds. With 30 seconds remaining and Talbot trying to pull Sistrunk to his back via Sistrunk's shoulders, the Kaplan wrestler flipped his body 180 degrees to face Talbot and score an escape. With seven seconds remaining Talbot scored on another double-leg shot and the first round ended with Talbot leading 4-1. Sistrunk won the toss and deferred to Talbot, who chose the bottom position. The Hannan wrestler scored a reversal by trying a switch, but then catching Sistrunk's head and pulling him backwards to the mat. When Sistrunk sat-out, Talbot tried to pull him back by his shoulders again, but all Sistrunk had to do was spin-over for another escape. With 45 seconds remaining in the period, Sistrunk shot on Talbot's leg, but a very good sprawl by Talbot put him in a position for an ankle-pick, which he did with 35 seconds left. Flipping through a half-nelson attempt, Sistrunk gained another escape, and the second period ended 8-3 in Talbot's favor. Sistrunk chose the bottom position to start the third period and Talbot did not try hard to keep in there, allowing Sistrunk to escape in the first second. Talbot quickly scored on another double-leg takedown, and he seemed to decide to just use takedowns for the remainder of the match. He let Sistrunk escape three more times and scored three more takedowns via double-leg shots. He rode-out his last one for 20 seconds until the match ended, giving the Hannan program its first state champion 16-7. | |||||||||||||
