Weight Class Synopsis

Church Point's Bruce Arceneaux was a runner-up in 2018 as a #3 seed.  He had other goals for his senior year, though.  His 12 matches before the state championships included Jacob McMillan Memorial and Brusly Invitational championships.  He placed a very respectable fifth in the Ken Cole and suffered his only losses there, both by decisions.  One was to the now two-time Division II state champion Taylor Clay of Carencro 6-2, and the other to Division II runner-up Kaleb Garcia 6-3.  Arceneaux received byes in the first two rounds, and then scored a quarterfinals fall in 1:14.  In the semifinal he had a tough match with Basile's fourth-seeded Dawson Ashford but prevailed 8-3.

Hannan senior David Duplechain's season included third-place finishes at the Brusly Invitational and the St. Tammany Parish Championships.  He had a win over third-seeded Eli Extine of Ouachita Christian, and his nine losses included seven from Division I and II opponents.  Of his Division II losses, one was to Baylor Waggoner of St. Louis, who suffered a season-ending injury at the Brusly Invitational.  The other, however, was to Arceneaux.  Duplechain reached the finals after a round-one bye, a round-two fall in 3:32 and a semifinals fall over Extine in 3:26.

Finals

(1) Bruce Arceneaux of Church Point pinned (2) David Duplechain of Hannan in 2:24
While lasting only 2:24, this match was a score-fest.  Duplechain bear-hugged Arceneaux and put him on his back in the first five seconds to go up 2-0.  Arseneaux, however, opted not to remain on his back and rolled Duplechain over, putting the Basile on his back for three nearfall points and surging ahead 5-2.  Duplechain escaped to make the match 5-2 after all of 15 seconds had elapsed.  Holding steadfastly to a single-leg shot on Arseneaux, Duplechain switched to a double to lift Arceneaux up and put him back on the mat for another takedown, making it a 5-5 match.  Arceneaux escaped to take a 6-5 lead, but with 25 seconds remaining Duplechain scored with a deep double-leg takedown.  Arseneaux could not escape this time, and the second round would start with Duplechain leading 7-6.

Duplechain won the toss and deferred to Arceneaux, who chose to start on bottom.  In the first 10 seconds of the period Arceneaux stood-up and reached behind him to grab Duplechain's head and arm.  It took a while, but Arseneaux finally put Duplechain on his back, scoring a reversal and shortly thereafter a fall at 2:24.
