On Wednesday evening there were five defending Division I state champions in the
Brother Martin Conlin Gymnasium for the dual meet between Brother Martin and
Holy Cross. One, Mason Massicot of the Crusaders, was in "street clothes"
while recovering from an injury that occurred last weekend at the Prep Slam in
Atlanta. The other four were competing. Holy Cross' Evan Frost and
Brother Martin's Alex Duncan used a technical fall and a pin to win their
matches rather easily. That was not the case for the remaining state
champions. At 120 lbs., sophomore Tiger Jacob Evans faced Crusader junior
Logan Bertot in the match of the evening (match described below).
Overall the Crusaders won nine of the 14 matches, and seven of those were via
falls by Mason Elsensohn, Connor Hoffman, Alex Duncan, Riley Horvath, Rocco
Horvath, Eli Hope and Cameron Frederick. Ethan Castex won by a regual
decision a defending 2019 runner-up Kyle West scored a major decision.
Of Holy Cross' five wins, Hayden Brodnax scored a fall. Evan Frost scored
a technical fall and Jacob Frost won via a major decision. Tigers Charles
Sauerwin, III and Cole Baiamonte won by regular decision Sauerwin and
Baiamonte matches (matches described below).

Mason Elsensohn (BM) pinned Brandon Gainy (HC)
in the third period. |
Elsensohn has had a very good year so far.
He won the Mandeville Open and the Dark Horse tournament in Tennessee.
He placed second in the Gulf Coast Clash and the Trey Culotta. His
only losses in Louisiana have come from Jacob Houser of St. Paul via
scores of 3-0 and 4-4 UTB. The freshman Gainy is no slouch,
however. He lost to Houser by only a 4-1 score and going into the
third period of this match was only down 2-0 before Elsensohn was able
to turn him to his back and pin him. |

Jacob Frost (HC) defeated Logan Bertot (BM via a 12-4 major decision
|
Bertot shot first with a single-leg on Frost. Quite possibly there
is only one wrestler who would not have afforded Bertot the takedown
after that shot, and that is Jacob Frost. Instead Frost took down
Bertot and was able to expose his back for three nearfall points.
It looked like this might become an easy match for Frost, but Bertot
gave the Crusaders some hope with a reversal near the end of the first
period. In the second period, however, Frost rode Bertot for the
entire two minutes and the score remained 5-2. In the third period
Frost escaped and took down Bertot again to lead 8-2. Frost let
Bertot escape and then took the Crusader down two more times to garner a
12-4 major decision. It should be noted that this was only
Bertot's tenth match of the season, and he had not competed since
December 9th. Expect him to get a lot better.

Charles Sauerwin, III defeated Quinn Williams
(BM) 4-2 |
Charles Sauerwin, III, competing at 132, gave
up a first-round takedown to Williams who lead 2-0 when the first period
ended. Sauerwin rode Williams for
the entire second round and thus it was Sauerwin on the bottom to start
the third period. Sauerwin stood up fast and tried to jump out of
Williams' grasp. But the junior Crusader held onto Sauerwin's
ankles and did not let him go. Unfortunately, just holding an
opponent's knees or ankles to prevent an escape, rather than letting the
opponent go or pulling one's self up to the opponent's back, constitutes the top man not working toward a pin, which is considered stalling and
results in a penalty point without cautions being mandated first.
On their next restart Sauerwin did the same thing hoping Williams would
as well, and Williams complied. Sauerwin gained another point and
was still on the bottom in a 2-2 match. With about 30 seconds left
Sauerwin started a switch and was able to reverse Williams and hold him
until the match ended. |

Cole Baiamonte (HC) defeated Adam Bourgeois
(BM) 1-0 |
Low scores are normal in matches at 285 lbs.
This one was no different as neither wrestler scored in the first period.
Baiamonte, the plucky sophomore that he is, rode the
junior Brown for the full two minutes in the second round. In the
third period Baiamonte scored an escape which won the match for him as
the two again could not score any takedowns. Baiamonte should be a
force at 285 lbs. this season. He has a record of 13-5. His
only loss to a Louisiana wrestler was to Comeaux's Donald Paul, and that
was a 1-0 match in the finals of the Jacob McMillan Memorial.
Paul, who is undefeated, also won the Trey Culotta. Baiamonte's other four
losses came at the South Walton Border Wars and the Kansas City
Stampede. He also has a win over a very strong Tony Gibson of
Church Point. |
