Team Standing after Day One
Place | Team | Points | Place | Team | Points | Place | Team | Points |
1. | Teurlings Catholic | 90.5 | 6. | Comeaux | 64 | 11. | East Ascension | 49.5 |
2. | Parkway | 82.5 | 7. | St. Amant | 61 | 12. | John Curtis | 48 |
3. | Sulphur | 78.5 | 8. | Live Oak | 56 | 13. | Zachary | 47 |
4. | Basile | 73.5 | 9. | Rayne | 53 | 14. | Holy Cross | 46 |
5. | Catholic | 69.5 | 10. | Brother Martin | 52 | T-15. | Hannan & Dutchtown | 44 |
Parkway has 10 quarterfinalists to Teurlings Catholic's nine. However, in the eight weight classes in which both teams are represented, the Teurlings Catholic quarterfinalists are seeded higher than the Parkway ones in five of them, giving the Rebels an edge. Additionally, giving Teurlings Catholic another advantage, is that only three Rebel wrestlers will face higher seeds in the quarterfinals while five Panther wrestlers are seeded lower than their opponents.
As in last week's Louisiana Classic 120 lbs. is a very tough weight class. Three-time defending Division III state champion Alex Yokubaitis of St. Louis is seeded first. Joshua Keeler of Parkway, a 2019 Division II runner-up and this season's Trey Culotta champion (as well as the tournament's Outstanding Wrestler) is seeded second while two-time defending Division III state champion Alex Menier is seeded third.
The 120 lbs. weight class, however, pales in comparison to the 138 lbs. bracket. The top seed is Byrd's Demetri Teddie who has not lost to a Louisiana opponent this season. Rummel's Jacob Ramirez, last week's Louisiana Classic champion is seeded second. St. Amant's Corey Brownell, whose only losses came from Teddie (two one-point matches) and Ramirez in the Louisiana Classic finals (6-4). The fourth seed is Brusly's Calep Balcuns, a defending Division III state champion. With no disrespect for the fifth and sixth seeds, Andrew Tamburo of Parkway and Jamarius Koshko of East Ascension, there is Caruso Signorelli. The Holy Cross senior, who placed third in Division I last season and was a Division I runner-up in 2018 and 2017, is seeded seventh.
UPSETS
Only one top-four seeds did not advance to Saturday's quarterfinals. Unseeded Daniel Burton of the Sulphur-B team led third-seeded William Billings of Rayne 6-5 until the 5:59 point of the 160 lbs. match. At the last second Burton was cited for stalling and Billings was award a match-tying point which forced a Sudden Victory period. Burton scored the last takedown during regulation time and he wasted little time, only 10 seconds, to score another one, giving him an 8-6 win. Billings will face unseeded Alan Cortez of Lafayette who defeated sixth seed D'Tre Williams of Zachary.
