Connor Hoffman, who won a state championship for the Crusaders in 2018 but finished a disappointing 4th in 2019, came back to win his second state championship via 3-1 win over Catholic's Peter Kelly |
Synopsis
Brother Martin's Connor Hoffman won a Division I state championship in 2018 and placed fourth in 2019. This season he won his first match over Rummel's Jacob Ramirez. Hoffman won the Catholic League District Championships, placed third in the Louisiana Classic and fourth in the Trey Culotta Invitational (losing to Ramirez). To reach his second Division I finals match Hoffman pinned his first two opponents in 0:55 and 0:44. He won his quarterfinals match via a 16-3 Major Decision and then pinned St. Paul's fourth-seeded Sean Cripple in 2:47.
Catholic junior Peter Kelly had a great season. He won the Brusly 8, the Louisiana Classic and the Greater Baton Rouge Championships. He placed second at the Dark Horse in Tennessee and fifth in the Gulf Coast Clash. Kelly's route to the finals included a first-round bye, a fall in 0:38 and another in 1:51. The semifinals match went the "full six," but Kelly came out the winner against Holy Cross' Charles Sauerwin, III.
