North Desoto's Joshua Sarpy won his second Division II state championship in as many tries (he was injured for the 2017 and 2019 seasons) as well as North Desoto's second championship of the night with a fall in 1:14 over Rummel's Carter Burgess. |
Synopsis
Much like the 113 lbs. weight class, Division II's 126 lbs. was owned by one wrestler - Joshua Sarpy of North Desoto. In fact, as evidenced at the Louisiana Classic, the 120 lbs. class has been one of, if not the, hardest of the 14. At the Louisiana Classic 120 lbs. included Holy Cross' Jacob Frost, Sarpy, Joshua Keeler of Parkway, Alex Yokubaitis of St. Louis, Reed Bergeron of Comeaux and Carter Duet of St. Paul. Of those wrestlers, two would win Division I titles. One would be a Division I runner-up and one would place fourth in Division I. One would win his second Division II championship while another would win his fourth Division III championship.
Of the 12 members of the Division II 120 lbs. wrestlers only four participated in the Louisiana Classic. Three were out of the tournament after the second consolation round. Two of those competed at the Lakeshore Open on the next day, but neither placed. Four others competed at the Rayne Invitational, in which one placed 3rd and one first.
The other was Sarpy, who placed fourth to Yokubaitis. Aside from Yokubaitis, Sarpy's only other loss was a 4-3 decision in the Louisiana Classic semifinals to Jacob Frost of Holy Cross. (Frost defeated Sarpy 2-0 in the 2019 Louisiana Classic finals.) Earlier in the season Sarpy won two out-of-state tournaments and placed third in two others. After the Louisiana Classic he won the Northwest Louisiana Regionals.
Of his Division II opponents, second-seeded Louis Lindsey of Haughton's best tournament finish was fifth at the Ken Cole. Rayne's Blaze Cormier placed second at the Rayne Invitational and fifth at the Lone Survivor. Coen Begnaud of Teurlings Catholic placed third at the Dale Ketelsen Memorial and fifth at the Rayne Invitational.
Meaning no disrespect to the other members of the Division II 120 lbs. weight class, Sarpy was "out of their league."
Sarpy's finals opponent, Carter Burgess, a sophomore from Rummel, was only seeded sixth. Yet only two of his losses were from Division II opponents. He lost 8-4 to Peyton Rijo of Belle Chasse, but that was his first match and was at 132 lbs. His other Division II loss was to Shaw's Raheem Bonnet, a 2020 Division II state champion. He lost to only one Division III opponent, state runner-up Kaul Kayser of Brusly. His nine other losses came to Division I opponents, so he had the experience needed to be the second best in the weight class.
