Synopsis
Shaw junior Ashton Surrency lost two matches to opponents from Louisiana, both of whom ended-up in the Division I 132 lbs. finals: Peter Kelly of Catholic and Connor Hoffman of Brother Martin. The loss to Kelly, a 6-2 decision, was in the Louisiana Classic finals. The loss to Hoffman was in the Catholic League District Championships. He did not compete in any individual bracketed tournaments before the Louisiana Classic, but he won 32 of 33 matches, losing only once to an out-of-state opponent. Two of his wins were 4-2 and 8-3 decision over Belle Chasse's Francisco Castro, who was seeded second. Surrency reached his second Division II finals match with a fall in 1:16 sandwiched between two technical falls of 15-0 and 17-0.
Castro was 32-5 prior to the state championships. Aside from the losses to Surrency, he only lost to Division I opponents - once to Live Oak's Clayton Hill and twice to Charles Sauerwin, III, of Holy Cross. Castro won the Jesuit Invitational placed third at the Warrior Open and placed fourth at the Battle of New Orleans and the Louisiana Classic.
Surrency had not faced Carencro junior Tyrick Clay. Castro had, defeating Clay in the Louisiana Classic consolation semifinals 14-8. His only other Division II loss was to Rummel's Jacob Ramirez (the Division II state champion). Clay's five other losses were to the likes of Caruso Signorelli of Holy Cross (a three-time Division I runner-up), Brother Martin's Connor Hoffman (a two-time Division I state champion), Peter Kelly of Catholic (a Division I runner-up) and Jamarius Koshko of East Ascension. Clay placed second at the Jacob McMillan Memorial and eighth at the Trey Culotta. He won the Acadiana Inferno and, after his fifth-place showing at the Louisiana Classic, he did not lose again. A week later he won the Ken Cole, besting Blake Menier of Basile (soon to be a Division III state champion) in the semifinals 8-6 SV and Comeaux's Avery Porsche via a 3:13 fall in the finals. A week later he won the Lafayette Metro by scoring a 10-2 major decision over Jayse Bouillion of Southside.
Clay won his first state tournament match in 51 seconds. He needed only 29 seconds to win his quarterfinals match which setup a rematch with Castro in the semifinals. Clay kept his now 14-0 run alive, winning the rematch 7-4 to reach the finals against Surrency.
