Synopsis
A third-place winner in 2019, Rayne's Ryder Hawley had a very successful
junior year. He won the Lafayette Metro championship, placed second at the
Jacob McMillan Invitational and the Lone Survivor, and he placed fifth at the
Ken Cole, losing to two Division I opponents. His five losses came from
Division I and Division III wrestlers, but he was 9-0 versus Division II
wrestlers. Hawley did not have an easy path to the finals. He needed
3:37 to get through his Round-One match, and then 5:03 to advance to the
semifinals. There he met fourth-seeded Jalan Arceneaux, whom he had
previously defeated via an 11-3 major decision and a fall in 2:29.
Arceneaux lasted the whole match, but Hawley scored another major decision over
the Rebel, 12-4.
Seeded second was Shaw sophomore Todd Ritter. His 38-16 recorded
included runner-up finishes at the Warrior Open, the Dale Ketelsen Memorial and
the Titan Invitational. He placed fifth at the Lakeshore Open and the
Catholic League District Championships. His only Division II loss was
to Belle Chasse's John Gagnon in a 21-17 "score-fest." And he had already
defeated third-seeded Gavin Crossen of Belle Chasse 16-11.
After wins in 2:57 and 2:23 to advance to the semifinals, his next match was
not Crossen. Crossen lost his first match to Pearl River senior Paul Egan
in 3:28. Egan then lost to NOMMA senior Zachary Hrarbar in 3:50.
Ritter pinned Hrabar in 5:40 in the Lakeshore Open, but Hrabar gave Ritter a
harder match this time in a 9-3 decision.
