Synopsis
Junior Kendrall Williams of Carencro and senior David Bernard of Teurlings
Catholic were both defending Division II state champions. Williams won at
170 lbs. in 2019 and Bernard won at 195 lbs. This season both wrestled the
vast majority of their matches at 182 lbs. Williams got a late start to
the season. His first match was on January 10th at the Lafayette Parish
Duals. Williams was 5-0 at that event, and his fourth match was a 3-2 win
over Bernard. That seemed very foreboding for Bernard, as he had been
competing since December 7th and lost to Williams on William's first day of
competition. After the Lafayette Parish Duals Williams had one match on
January 15th and another on February 5th. Bernard also had a loss to
Basile's Isaac Cortez in the finals of the Ken Cole. Accordingly the
undefeated Williams was seeded first and Bernard was seeded second.
Yet he showed no weaknesses at the state championship as his path to the
finals included pins in 0:41, 1:36 and 1:37.
Bernard also had a loss to Basile's Isaac Cortez in the finals of the Ken
Cole. But prior to state the losses to Williams and Cortez were spliced
between 26 wins. Bernard won the Jacob McMillan Memorial, placed second to
an Oklahoma wrestler at the Lone Survivor, second at the Ken Cole and won the
Lafayette Metro championships. His path to the finals was a little harder
than Williams', which is appropriate for a second-seed versus a top-seed.
He won his first two matches in 0:30 and 3:52. In the semifinals he won a
tough 6-0 match against Shaw's third-seeded sophomore Jude Monaco, but that
should not have been surprising to him. On December 7th he beat Monaco
6-1.
