Synopsis

Top-seeded Dylan Olivier fared well in his out-of-state tournaments, placing second twice and third one.  At the Louisiana Classic he lost to Division I placer Austin Cook of Live Oak and Tanner Melendrez of Fontainebleau, who might easily have placed were he not injured, but did not place.  He came back, though, to win the Northwest Louisiana Regionals which included tough matches against Benton's Trey Winkler (9-3) and Haughton's Justin Nixon (4-2).  His road to the finals included a bye, a 14-1 major decision and a semifinal fall over Winkler in 4:36.

According to TrackWrestling data, second-seeded Donovan Kaufman of Rummel has a record of 1-0 prior to the state championships.  Why that merited a second-seed spot the editor does not know.  Whoever placed him there seemed to know, though.  Kaufman pinned his first opponent in 1:15 and defeated his second via a 20-10 major decision.  Getting past third-seeded Justin Nixon was hair-raising, as Kaufman won 13-11 during a Sudden Victory period.  His placing may have been based on his performance at the 2019 State Championships.  He placed fourth to Olivier's third.  Nixon placed sixth, and Kaufman defeated Nixon 10-6 in the consolation semifinals..  The winner that year was David Bernard of Teurlings Catholic, but he was at 182 lbs. this year, and last year's runner-up graduated.
