Synopsis

Rayne senior Miles Doucet was 18-4 upon entering the state championships.  He had a loss via a fall to Willis in a dual meet on January 8th.  He placed second to Basile's Gabe Duplechin in the Rayne Invitational  and fourth to Duplechin at the Ken Cole Memorial Willis placed 5th in the Ken Cole, so that gave Doucet a seeding advantage, as well as Doucet pinning Willis to win the Lafayette Metro championship.  Doucet scored falls in 0:33, 1:48 and 5:52 to reach the finals.

Willis was 18-7 entering the state championships.  He also lost to Duplechin twice, once in his first match of the season and once at the Ken Cole Memorial.  He placed fifth in the Ken Cole Memorial and second at the Lafayette Metro championships, losing to Doucet each time.  He lost to Teurlings Catholic's Cameran Watson in a dual meet but beet Watson in the Lafayette Metro semifinals, giving his a seeding edge over Watkins (who was seeded third).  His other losses were to Brian Amis of Brusly, who placed second in Division III to Duplechin, and to Division I placers Cole Ulfers of St. Paul (the 2020 runner-up at 220 lbs.) and to Live Oak's Austin Cook (6th-placed),  Willis had a tougher route to the finals.  H went the "full six" against Rummel's Kolbe Fields in a 5-0 win, then he pinned his quarterfinal opponent in 0:57.  Watkins was next for their seasonal tie-breaking match, and Watkins was tougher than he was when Willis pinned him in the first period of the Lafayette Metro championships.  Willis won this match 5-1 to gain the finals match
