2020 State Wrestling Championships - Division II 285 pounds |
April 15th, 2020 | Written by: Editor |
Zachary Bernard became Lakeshore's first state champion with a fall in 4:17 over Jason Bush of Shaw |
Synopsis
Lakeshore's Zachary Bernard lost only six matches, and they were all to Division I wrestlers, including three who placed at the state tournament. But those three losses were to Chalmette's Jaden Ben, so he was not just haphazardly losing to just anyone. He won the Billy Duplessis Invitational and placed fourth at the Louisiana Classic before winning at the St. Tammany Parish Championships. Bernard received a round-one bye, pinned his quarterfinals opponent in 2:26 and scored an 8-0 major decision over Pearl River's Mason Erickson in the semifinals.
Jason Bush of Shaw was seeded second over Kane Chisholm of Teurlings Catholic for reasons the editor cannot find. Chisholm place second at the Lafayette Metro championships, but Bush's only tournament place was 3rd at the Catholic League District Tournament. Chisholm also had a round-one bye and pinned his quarterfinal opponent in 2:33. In the semifinals, however, he did not face Bush, but rather Jon'tavius Thomas of North Desoto, who defeated Bush 4-4 after a second tie-breaker round. That did not seem to bother Chisholm much, though, as he pinned Thomas in 3:56 to have the chance to meet Bernard in the finals.
