Synopsis

Basile's Andre Johnson spent little time to win his four matches en route to his first Division III state championship.  Actually, he spent as much time winning his first three matches as he did winning the finals match.  Round 1, quarterfinals and semifinals: 0:34 + 0:51 + 0:24 = 1:49.  Time of finals match pin: 1:49.

All but two of Johnson's losses came at 120 lbs. and included two against St. Louis's 2020 Division III state champion Dohnavan McMichael, and Division II fourth-place winner Jason Brouillette of Lakeshore. At 106 lbs. he lost to Teurlings Catholic's Ethan Boudreaux, who would be a Division II runner-up, and Parkway's David Viers, who would place third in Division I, both at the Ken Cole in which he placed third.  Johnson won the Brusly Invitational and the Rayne Invitation, pinning five of his opponents before his 3-1 finals match at Rayne against Division I Sulphur's Doc Miller.

Third-seeded Henry Oliver of South Beauregard is an eighth-grader.  9-10 entering the tournament, and his best showing was a third-place finish at the Brusly Invitational, whereas Preston Curtis of John Curtis placed second, which put him as the second-seed in this weight class.  Oliver's road to the finals included a first-round bye, a pin in 1:11 and a semifinals pin over Curtis in 5:50.

Young Master Oliver should be very pleased with his runner-up finish.  It may easily be a stepping-stone for South Beauregard to become the next Division III school to have a four-time state champion.
