Synopsis

Senior Dohnavan McMichael of St. Louis got rid of any losses by December 14th.  Those were to a defending (and soon to be two-time) Division II state champion Glenn Price of Shaw, a defending (and soon to be two-time) Division I state champion, Evan Frost of Holy Cross, Division I fourth-place finisher Vincent Bruno of Mandeville and Division I's Chase O'Con of Comeaux.  After the loss to Frost, McMichael won his next 24 matches over seven opponents from Division I schools, six from Division II schools and 13 from Division III schools, including four over his semifinals opponent, Basile's Luc Johnson.

It is tough to determine why McMichael was seeded second and Grigsby first.  Grigsby defeated McMichael at least once, but that was in the 2019 state championships.  This year McMichael had a better overall winning percentage: 0.91 vs. 0.89.  McMichael defeated 10 Division I wrestlers.  None of Grigsby's Division I victims found a place on the Division I podium.  Four of McMichael's wins were over Division II wrestlers who placed at the state championships, including Rayne runner-up Dayton Dugas and fourth-place finishers Jason Brouillette of Lakeshore and Blaze Cormier of Rayne (at 120 lbs.).  Grigsby pinned Cormier in 2:00.  McMichael pinned Cormier twice (no time listed in one, 3:58 in the other) and defeated Cormier via a 10-2 major decision.  McMichael had 28 wins over Division III opponents including four over third-place finisher Luc Johnson of Basile and one over Hannan's sixth-place finished Cole Bartlett.  Grigsby had one victory over a fourth-place winner.

Grigsby's path to the finals included a first-round bye, a pin in 0:32 and a tough 14-12 match with defending Division III state champion Timothy Routon of Church Point.

McMichael advanced to the finals via pins in 0:25, 5:18 and an 8-0 Major Decision over Johnson in the semifinals.

The above findings in no manner are meant to disparage Master Grigsby.  His back-to-back runner-up finishes as a freshman and a sophomore indicate he could very well win championships over the next two years.  The editor is just baffled at the seeding of this weight class.  Usually he can find justification, but he could not in this case.
