2020 State Wrestling Championships - Division III 120 pounds |
April 15th, 2020 | Written by: Editor |
Synopsis
In his junior year Basile's Alex Menier lost only three matches, and all three were to wrestlers who would be on Division I podiums at the end of the state championships. His first loss was a very close 5-4 match against Carter Duet of St. Paul in the finals of the Trey Culotta. (Duet would later be a Division I runner-up.) A little more than a month later he lost a Ken Cole semifinals match to Parkway's Joshua Keeler, who would later be on the top of a Division I podium. In the Ken Cole consolation finals the third-seeded Menier lost to the fourth-seeded Reed Bergeron of the hosting Comeaux Spartans. His wins included three at the Trey Culotta from very good schools: Vestavia Hills, Alabama, St. Thomas of Houston, Texas and the Woodward Academy of the Atlanta, Georgia area. He won the Brusly Invitational and the Rayne Invitational, both via three falls. In this event Menier defeated his first two opponents via falls of 1:41 and 2:50 to advance to his third consecutive Division III finals match.
Kayser, also a junior, won the Raider 8 and the Griffin Open. He placed second to Holy Cross' Jacob Frost in the Brusly 8. Kayser's road to the finals included a fall in 0:09, a 13-9 decision over Sean King (JC) and a semifinals fall over second-seeded Collin Veron (DLS) in 3:02
