Synopsis

Seeded fifth in 2019, Basile's Blake Menier defeated the fourth seed via a 17-1 technical fall, followed by a 16-10 win over the top-seed in the semifinals and then won a state championship via a 3-1 win.   Menier earned the top seeding spot in 2020, though.

Having no experience with Brusly's Marc Martinez, the second seed, did not come into play as Martinez was upset by third-seeded Keyshawn Jones of St. Louis.  Menier had experience with Jones having defeated him 10-4 in the finals of the Rayne Invitational.  During the season Menier placed third at the Jacob McMillan Memorial, won the Brusly Invitational and placed third at the Ken Cole, losing to the eventual champion and Division II state champion Tyrick Clay of Carencro.  Menier only had three matches at the state tournament.  He pinned his quarterfinals and finals opponents but had a tougher time in the semifinal with Hannan's Cade Hontiveros in a 5-1 win.

This was the second time the Menier family had two state champions.

Johnson was seeded third as Martinez defeated him in a dual meet on January 3rd.  He placed fourth at the Warrior Open, first in the consolation round of the Lakeshore Open, second at the Brusly Invitational and the Rayne Invitational (both losses to Menier) and won the Jesse James Southwest Shootout.  His route to the finals included a round-one bye, a fall in 2:48 and a slugfest of a semifinals with Martinez, with Johnson coming out on top of a 17-11 score
