Calep Balcuns won his second state championship for Brusly via a fall in 0:54 over junior Zachary Lauland of De la Salle |
Synopsis
Balcuns had a very good season, ending his high school career with his second Division II state championship. Against his 29 wins were only three loses - a disqualification in the Louisiana Classic, at which he earlier defeated two Division I opponents and a soon-to-be-tapped Division II state champion. In the consolation semifinals he lost to a soon-to-be two-time Division I state champion, Connor Hoffman of Brother Martin (Hoffman won his first state title in 2018). Balcuns won the Brusly Invitational, placed fifth at the Louisiana Classic, was injured and unable to compete in the consolation finals and placed third in the Greater Baton Rouge championships. At the state championships he pinned three of his opponent in under a minute. In the semifinals, he only managed a 13-1 major decision.
Zachary Lauland of De la Salle was seeded second. Lauland, at 34-8, won the consolation championship at the Warrior Open, placed third at the Lakeshore Open and placed first at the Bulldog Brawl at Fontainebleau. He placed second to Balcuns at the Brusly Invitational but won the Titan Invitational. Lauland started the tournament with a 17-0 Major Decision in round-one, a pin of 0:46 in the semifinals and a 12-3 Major Decision over Kaplan's Alexzander Zaunbrecher who early beat third-seeded Ethan Langley of Basile.
