Synopsis

Grayson Penniston became Hannan's second state champion, joining Deionesio Talbot who won a title in 2019.  The sophomore Pennison's win is certainly a story by itself, but another is as worthy.  It is not that the second-seeded Pennison did not meet the top-seeded Andrew Lynch of Church Point, but rather that Pennison's opponent was not top-seeded Andrew Lynch of Church Point, but rather the young man who defeated Lynch in the semifinals - a fifth-seeded eighth-grader from Evangel, Michael Gilreath.  To add to the story, Gilreath almost won the match, falling two points short in a 16-15 match.  He is another to watch out for as a four-time state champion.

Gilreath's first upset was over fourth-seeded Jace Jordon of Thomas Jefferson, which was after his round-one pin in 1:21 over Preston Williamson of St. Louis.  Then he scored the semifinals fall over Lynch in 1:21 to advance to the finals.

Pennison was 26-9 entering the event and all but one of his losses came to Division I opponents.  (Another from Belle Chasse competed at 138 lbs.)  He placed third at the St. Tammany Parish Championships.  Pennison received a bye in round-one and then scored a 10-3 over Basile's Cole Manuel.  He pinned third-seeded Caden Gaudet of John Curtis in 4:25 in the semifinals.
