Synopsis

All but one of Shad Sheffie's losses came from Division I opponents (including Trent Mahoney of East Ascension eight times).   His sole Division III loss was an 11-5 match with Hannan junior Mark Pennison.  Sheffie avenged that loss at the Louisiana Classic, pinning Pennison in 3:19.

Sheffie placed second at the Warrior Open (losing to Mahoney), third at the Lakeshore Open (semifinals loss to Mahoney), second at the Griffin Open (yeah, Mahoney) and second at the Spartan Invitational (guess).  After an almost three-week respite, Sheffie placed second at the Big Horse Open (again).  On January 11th Sheffie finally won a tournament, the Brusly Invitational to which Mahoney was not eligible.  A week later Sheffie placed fourth at the Louisiana Classic (losing to some East Ascension kid in the semifinals) and a week after that he placed second at the Ken Cole Memorial (Mahoney again).  In the Greater Baton Rouge Championships Sheffie place fourth, but neither of his losses were to Mahoney.  When not against Mahoney Sheffie defeated some very good wrestlers, including Andrew Gonzales of North Desoto (15th in Division II), Catholic's Canon Hunt, albeit Hunt avenged that loss during the same event (the Louisiana Classic, and Hunt placed third later in Division I).  He beat defending Division III state champion Logan David of Basile, the Division I second seed at 170, Logan Lewis of Byrd twice) and Central's Austin Reason (twice).  Hence, although his season began with a loss it turned out pretty well.  (Yes, the loss was to Mahoney.)

Sheffie made advancing to the finals look easy.  He pinned his first three opponents in 0:23, 1:00 and 1:49 to set-up a tie-breaking finals match between with Pennison.

According to the seeding Sheffie was supposed to meet Basile's Logan David, who beat Pennison 10-3 in the Ken Cole quarterfinals yet only 2-2 in an ultimate tie-breaker round in the consolation finals.  Pennison, evidently, is a fast learner.  Seeded third, he totally "turned the tables" on David in a 12-5 win which placed him in the finals.  Prior to that he pinned Shivang Thakor in 2:46 and Kollin Guillory of Church Point in 2:29.
