Synopsis

The defending Division III 285 lbs. state champion, Datremecious "Trey" White of Evangel Christian, had a great 2019-20 wrestling season.  White was 18-0 with 16 falls.  His closest match was a 9-4 win over John Curtis' John Drake.  No slouch there, as Drake was a finalist in the Trey Culotta and the Ken Cole.  White competed out of state against out-of-state wrestlers six times.  Two were en route to Holy Innocents for the Prep Slam XII, and four were at the Prep Slam.  White pinned all six of them, as well as winning the Prep Slam XII 285 lbs. title.  And worse for his opponents, he did so in the first period of each match.  Only three opponents lasted more than a minute.

White missed matches in December due to taking the ACT and his participation in a football all-state game.  He suffered bruised ribs and torn ligaments in his first match at the Prep Slam, but he did not let such annoyances stop him from winning three more matches to win the event.  They did not prevent him from easily winning the Brusly Invitational, the Northwest Louisiana Regionals and the Shreveport City Championships.  In this event his first two matches were over in a total of 53 seconds.  His last match was his third consecutive trip to the Division III finals match.

Church Point's Tony Gibson had a 13-2 record upon entering the state championships.  His losses were to Division I fifth-place winner Cole Baiamonte in the Jacob McMillan and to Trey White in the Brusly Invitational finals.  He won the Rayne Invitational, placed second at the Brusly Invitational and placed third in the Jacob McMillan Memorial.  To advance to the finals Gibson pinned his round-one opponent in 0:13 and his semifinals opponent in 5:08.  Kennith Jackson, III, of De la Salle upset third-seeded John Drake of John Curtis and gave Gibson a full semifinals match, albeit yielding to Gibson 7-1.
