Basile repeats with ease

After Friday's wrestling the Basile Bearcats held a nine-point lead over a very good Brusly team.  Entering the Saturday rounds the Bearcats had nine semifinalists and the Panthers had eight.  Six Bearcats advanced to the finals but only four Panthers could say the same, and that ended anyone's hopes of defeating the Bearcats for the team title.  In the finals, Basile had five champions and one runner-up.  The Panthers had three champions and one runner-up.  Not that it mattered, but Basile only entered 13 wrestlers to 14 by Brusly and St. Louis.  Basile's state champions were Andre Johnson at 106 lbs., Alex Menier (his third) at 120 lbs., Blake Menier at 132 lbs. (his second), Isaac Cortez and 182 lbs. (his third) and Gabe Duplechin at 220 lbs.

Brusly had three state champions.  Calep Balcuns, at 138 lbs. and Andrew Trahan at 152 lbs. won their second titles.  Joshua Westly won his first state championship at 160 lbs.

Dohnavan McMichael won at 113 lbs. and Alex Yokubaitis snagged his fourth Division III championship at 126 lbs. for St. Louis.  Grayson Pennison of Hannan at 145 lbs., St. Michael's Shad Sheffie won the 170 lbs. title, Chase Spooner of South Beauregard won at 195 lbs. and Datremecious "Trey" White won his second title for Evangel.

Eight Bearcats from their 2020 state championships rosters will return for the 2021 state championships.  They should include two defending state champions, two third-place finishers, one fourth-place finisher and one who was a match away from placing.

The Panthers may have an edge over the Bearcats, on paper at least, in 2021.  They are returning 12 wrestlers from their 2020 state championships teams, including two state champions, two runners-up and nine other placers in the top-six.  But it all comes down to who performs best over one weekend.
