Brother Martin proved why many consider them the favorites
to regain the Division I team title.
On Wednesday, November 24th, the Crusaders sat-out several of their best
yet still defeated De la Salle, which should be a threat to dethrone Basile for
the Division III team title, 54-22.
The Cavaliers started strong with Dylan Duvernay and Dylan Brown ("Dynamic Duo?"
- yeah, that's not going to catch-on) winning the first two matches.
But then the Crusaders started dominating the match with five consecutive
falls. Sophomore Jacob Elsensohn,
who as of November 27th was 18-0 as a 120 lbs. varsity Crusader starter, scored
the first, followed by Bryce Hite, Jacob Brubacher, Nicholas Cusimano, and Rory
Horvath. That run put the Crusaders
ahead 30-10. As the Cavaliers had
to forfeit 160 lbs. and 195 lbs., they needed to win all five of the remaining
matches by falls to manage a tie.
They managed to win three of them, but only Jason Krail (182 lbs.) won via a
fall. 2021 Division III finalists
Spencer Hughes (152 lbs.) and Luke Robertson (170 lbs.) won their matches, but
only via 8-2 and 1-0 scores. In the
final two matches, it was Brother Martin's big guys, Christopher Sulli (220
lbs.) and Chaney Phillips (285 lbs.) putting an exclamation point behind the
win, both winning via first-period pins.
The Cavaliers, the 2021 Division III team runner-up, were
without the services of Colin Veron and Liam O'Connor, who are on this season's
rosters and were on the 2021 team.
The Crusaders did not utilize several starters who competed at the Cinco Ranch
Big 12 and the Gulf Coast Clash, including Logan Dacuyan, Richie Clementi,
Hunter Chabert, Ty Duncan and Rocco Horvath.
Also missing for the Crusaders was Luke Ohler, who is recovering from a
shoulder injury suffered last weekend at the Gulf Coast Clash.

Coach Duffy Rousselle of Brother Martin is laughing after a comment made
by a De la Salle coach after Benetrix, who temporarily lost
consciousness due to an unintentional choke-out, was determined to be
unharmed. Benetrix competed three days later at the Crusader Dual,
