Spartans hoist another hosting invitational trophy |
November 24th, 2021| Written by: Staff writer |
East Ascension won their Spartan Invitational for the second consecutive year, besting Dutchtown 156 to 113.5. Baton Rouge placed third, followed by Holy Cross and Fontainebleau.
Championships seemed to matter this time, as none of the top-five teams had full squads. The Spartans had four individual winners, followed by the Griffins with three and the Bulldogs of Baton Rouge with one. Baton Rouge had three runner-up finishers. East Ascension had 12 entrants, Dutchtown nine and Baton Rouge had 10. The team scores differences appear, inside the editor's head, at least, to correlate with the numbers of champions and runners-up the schools had. Holy Cross, at least, maintained the "wrestle-backs win tournaments" concept as they had only one finalist, nut six of their remaining seven wrestlers placed in the top-four.
Walker freshman Kye Karcher (113 lbs.) ran his record to 15-0 in his third tournament win of the season. Cole Mire of Dutchtown, approximately 16 hours after predicted by the Louisiana Wrestling News, won his first event of the season. Santos Ramos' return to the Spartans' lineup was a rousing success after a 10-5 finals win over Fontainebleau's Raymond Favaza. Comeaux Bryce Reiter (9-0) and East Ascension's Corey Holmes (10-0) kept their 2021-22 season unblemished.
One of the more surprising finishes was at 152 lbs. Dutchtown sophomore Foster Shank was 1-2 at the state championships last February while his finals opponent, freshman Nicholas DiGeralamo of Holy Cross, went 4-2 and placed fourth as an eighth-grader. While Shank won the Titan Invitational and the Griffin Open, and this was DiGeralamo's first event of the year, the Tiger freshman was favored to win. It appeared he would after needing only eight seconds to take down Shanks, and he scored two near-fall points with 1:58. Evidently his pinning combination went awry and Shanks reversed him to his back and scored a fall 16 seconds later. Shank was voted the tournament's Outstanding Wrestler after the win.
