Louisiana sends 45 to the NHSCA Nationals - garners four All-Americans
March 25th-27th, 2022| Written by: Staff writer

Louisiana All-Americans win three of four placement matches - Lanosga wins, Price takes 2nd, Smith places 5th and Reaux 7th

Jesuit's Spencer Lanosga, John Curtis' Anthony Smith and Landon Reaux of Southside walked off of their last 2022 NWCA Nationals mats with smiles on Sunday.  Shaw's Glenn Price may not have, but he should.  All four were competing in Sunday's placement matches, having already attained All-American status.

Lanosga proved to be the best of the 25 participants in the Sophomores 285 lbs. weight class via a 4-1 win over 2022 Kansas state champion Sebastian Lopez.  The Blue Jay sophomore finished the event with a 4-0 record.

The Patriot's Smith placed fifth via a fall in 4:51 over Maine's Benjamin Wilcox.  There were eight wrestlers in his weight class, as there were in the Division III state championships, in which Smith also placed fifth.  Suffice to say the freshmen in this weight class proved every bit as hard as the six sophomores, juniors and seniors Smith faced at the River Center.  Smith's tournament record was 2-2.

Reaux had 33 entrants in his weight class and the two who beat him placed fourth and sixth.  The Southside Shark defeated Pennsylvania's Preston Machado 11-5 and was 5-2 on the weekend.

Shaw's Price had 36 others to contend with in the Seniors 120 lbs. weight class.  Seeded 6th, he defeated #3 Matthew Roland of North Carolina 5-4 and #2 Joe Manno of New Jersey 1-0 to set-up the match with Yanni Vines, a three-time Alabama Class 7A state champion for Thompson High School.  Vines handed Price his first loss in over two years with a 6-2 decision.  Price's record over the three-day event was 4-1.

Make that four

Kynan Sonnier, a 2016 Division II state champion for Teurlings Catholic and brother of state champions Ashton Sonnier, Colten Sonnier and Andre Viator, noted that this summary failed to recognize Jesuit's Spencer Lanosga as a participant.  Lanosga was not on the first list I compiled from FloWrestling.  Neither were Jack O'Connor or Kael Reaux.  Without this kind of help I would not have something that sucks out $10,000+ a year to leave to my daughter.

Lanosga, unsurprisingly, is a finalist in the sophomore 285 lbs. weight class, having pinned two opponents and scoring an 11-0 major decision over another.  A 2022 Division I state champion and 2021 Division I runner-up, the top-seeded Lanosga will face Sebastian Lopez, seeded second, of Garden City, Kansas in the finals.  Lopez is a 2022 Kansas 6A state champion.

Louisiana has three All-Americans: Price makes the finals; Johnson vies for 3rd or 5th; Reaux the Elder battles for 7th

My remaining hope is that John Curtis freshman Anthony Johnson took offense at my inferring he only made it to the quarterfinals because he received a bye in a small weight class.  He left no doubt that he belonged there after defeating Maine's Canton Hill via a 12-2 major decision to reach the semifinals in the freshman 195 lbs. weight class.  In the semifinals he fell to Virginia's Wyatt Bush in 3:21.  In the consolation semifinals he lost to Melvin Whitehead of Nevada and will face Rhode Island's Benjamin Wilcox for 5th-place on Sunday.

Shaw's Glenn Price made it to the Senior 120 lbs. semifinals with a 5-4 decision over North Carolina's Matthew Roland.  Roland was a Class 4A 120 state runner-up for Pinecrest High School, whose only loss in the 2020-21 season was in the state finals.  Price, on the other hand, was undefeated in the 2021-22 season, and his last match was his fourth Division II state championship.  In the semifinals he defeated Joe Manno of St. Joseph High School in New Jersey.  Manno placed fifth in the NJSIAA State Championships in 2022.

In the finals Price will face Yanni Vines of Thompson High School in Alabaster, Alabama.  Vines won Alabama Class 7A state championships in 2020, 2021 and 2022, and he placed third in 2019.  Vines, though, tasted defeat three times both in the 2021-22 and 2020-21 season.  Price has not lost a match since February 1st, 2020 (Evan Frost of Holy Cross).

Competing for seventh-place on Sunday is Southside's Landon Reaux.  The junior lost his second match on Friday but stormed back with three straight wins on Saturday before falling in the consolation quarterfinals.  He will face Preston Machado of Milford Pennsylvania.

The best runs of the day were by Sulphur's two-time Division I state champion Corey Hyatt and Brother Martin Division I state champion Rocco Horvath.  Both ran-off four straight wins before falling in the consolation quarterfinals, just one match shy of the All-American placement matches.

Dang!  Just Dang!  Curtis sophomore win three matches to advance to the quarterfinals at the NHSCA Nationals

Updated as of 5:45 p.m. on Friday, March 25th

[Have I mentioned recently how much I hate FloWrestling?  I now love how their video "Play" button covers up the state from which a wrestler hails.]

Dang!  Just Dang!  Well, as far as sophomores go, at least.  John Curtis' 2022 Division III state champion Brendan Dang went 3-0 with three falls in the first day of the 33rd NHSCA Nationals in Virginia.  Dang, competing at 220 lbs., was the only sophomore to advance to the quarterfinals. He was also the only Team Louisiana member to win three matches.  He will be joined in the quarterfinals by two Shaw seniors: four-time Division II state champion Glenn Price at 120 lbs. and two-time Division II state champion Jude Monaco at 182 lbs.  Also having quarterfinals bragging rights, if only due to a bye in a smaller weight class, is John Curtis freshman Anthony Davis at 195 lbs.

Other winners for Team Louisiana on Friday were Kael Reaux, Caleb Lavine (2), Brandt Babineaux, Nicholas DiGeralamo, Bryan Cullen, Holden Wempren, Jackson Calderano, Landon Reaux, Wiley Boudreaux (2), Nyan Charles, Aiden Charles, Todd Ritter, Rocco Horvath and Shannon Frey.  Aiden Krass advanced in the championship bracket via a forfeit which afforded him two byes in the consolation bracket.

At least 44 young Louisianians travelled to Virginia Beach, Virginia for the 33rd National High School Coaches Association NATIONALS championships, one of the largest and most prestigious high school events in the country.  Competition will start today, Friday, March 25, and end on Sunday, March 27th.

The young men will compete in divisions corresponding to their current academic year.  Jesuit sent the most competitors with nine, followed by East Ascension with five.  John Curtis, St. Paul and Shaw sent four wrestlers apiece.  Also sending representatives were Brother Martin (1), Catholic (2), De la Salle (2), Holy Cross (1), Lafayette (3), St. Amant (1), Sam Houston (1), Southside (3), Sulphur (2) and Teurlings Catholic (2).

For younger wrestlers and parents of wrestlers who have not sent their kids to an off-season out-of-state tournament, please let it be known:

Such an event is a chance to learn the styles of wrestling in other states.  It is a chance to watch the intensity of the very good wrestlers.  And it is a chance to learn that the other wrestlers are just as wary, or downright scared, of your child as your child is of them.  And when they are not "between the whistles" in a match your kids will learn that the other guys are just kids too.  Some are DC kids and some are Marvel kids.  Some like country music and some like anything at all as long as it is not country music.  Some of their parents chose to wear leisure suits, others had leisure suits thrust upon them, and others learned all they needed to know about wearing leisure suits in kindergarten.

Ten of the competitors won state championships in 2022 or 2021.  Six others were 2022 runners-up.

The results and perhaps videos, depending upon one's subscription status, my be viewed on FloWrestling by clicking the link on the left.  For the record, having tried to research the opponents of only the seven seniors, I, more than ever, really hate FloWrestling's tournament coverage.
