* Records include all wins but only losses to Louisiana wrestlers. Forfeits and defaults are not counted.
In 2021, Quinn Collins of
Carencro was undefeated upon entering the state championships.
He was only 3-0 as he did not wrestle a match until January 16th, but he
was still the #1 seed a 220 lbs., and he looked pretty strong, spending all of
1:12 during his two matches prior to the finals.
The lack of mat time may have been a factor in his loss to #3 Joel
Lanclos of Teurlings Catholic.
Collins
scored takedowns in the first and second period while limiting Lanclos to a mere
escape.
In the third period, though,
Lanclos outscored Collins 6-3, and the score was tied 7-7 prior to Lanclos
recording a fall in 5:19.
In the 2021-22 season, the
senior from Carencro also started late, on January 8th.
Come the state tournament, he was 7-0 with a 7-4 win over Lanclos and a
fall over Garrett Billeaud, who was seeded fourth, in the Lafayette Metro
Championships finals. Despite only having
seven matches, whereas Lanclos had 27, the win over
Lanclos sealed him as the #1 seed.
Lanclos was 20-7 entering
the event.
He placed third at the
Louisiana Classic and was the runner-up at the Ken Cole.
Collins and Shaw’s Nigel Whitehead were the only two Division II
wrestlers to whom Lanclos lost.
Every other loss came from a Division I or III state placer. He defeated Roger Holmes of St. Michael
(D3 3rd) and Joel Marchand of Hannan (D3 4th).
He split with Kristofer Mesloh of Parkway (D1 3rd) and Blayden Laidlaw of Sulphur
(D1 4th).
He placed fifth at the Black Horse, third at the LACL, second at the Ken Cole and
won the Jacob McMillan.
Shaw’s Chad Gooden was seeded third. Gooden was 9-5 and placed fourth at the Ken Cole. Garrett Billeaud of North Vermillion, the Lafayette Metro runner-up, was seeded fourth. He place fifth at the Ken Cole, third at the Jacob McMillan and won the Spartan Invitational and Acadiana Varsity Invitational.
Only North Desoto’s Marques
Hampton rocked the seeding boat in the first round by defeating #5 John Simmons,
III, 13-8.
The quarterfinals would
stop that
from happening again…in
the championship bracket, at least.
Collins and Lanclos ensured
a rematch of the 2021 finals match.
Collins did it quickly, in 0:57.
Lanclos was pushed the distance by Gooden in a 5-2 win.

Championship Consolation Rounds
Billeaud pinned Breaux
after over five minutes in the Lafayette Metro.
He only required 2:29 to defeat him again in the CSFs.
Gooden was a different story as the Shaw Eagle recorded a fall over
Billeaud in 2:27 to place third.
Hampton blew through his
first two consolation rounds in 1:55
and 0:26 before Gooden derailed him.
He rebounded to defeat #6 Robert Breaux of Rayne in 1:22 to place fifth.

The extra matches this season may have paid off for Collins…barely. He shutout Lanclos in the first two periods while scoring two takedowns and an escape to open a 5-0 lead. In the final period, he got tired, but Lanclos still could not score offensively. His only three points came from stalling penalties on Collins. One more would have cost Collins the match, but he held on just long enough to give the Bears their only championship of the event.
