St. Louis’ defending Division III state champion and top-seeded Luke Caballero and Brusly’s second-seeded Cameron Redditt, had markedly different records prior to the Brusly Invitational finals.  Caballero was 16-3.  Redditt was 13-6.  The difference appeared to be apparent in the Brusly finals as Caballero won handily via a 10-2 MD.  Redditt got better.

Seeding Synopsis

Defending Division III state champion and top-seeded Luke Caballero and Brusly’s second-seeded Cameron Redditt, had very different records going back to the 2021 state championships.  There, at 106 lbs., Caballero upset top-seeded Preston Curtis of John Curtis to win the Division III 106 lbs. title.  Redditt, then a freshman, finished one spot before the placing rounds.  In the 2021-22 season, Caballero was 16-3 upon reaching the Brusly Invitational finals.  Redditt, upon reaching that same finals match, was 13-6.  Caballero had won the Lakeshore Open and placed third in both the Griffin Open and the Jacob McMillan Memorial.  His losses in those two events were to Ashton Sonnier (D2 1st) and Brennan Romero (D2 1st) of Teurlings Catholic, one a defending 2021 and one a soon-to-be 2022 Division II state champion.  He also had a loss to Tyson Roach, the soon-to-be Division I state champion.  Redditt had a loss to Sonnier and one to Division I fifth-place winner Anthony Perez of Chalmette.  He won the Brusly 8, but with a loss.  None of his other losses were to anyone who placed at the 2022 state championships.  The difference appeared to be apparent in the Brusly finals as Caballero won handily via a 10-2 MD.

After the Brusly Invitational things changed for Redditt.  The Panther sophomore won his next event, the Rayne Invitational, and placed fifth at the Greater Baton Rouge Championships, sporting a 4-2 record.  Caballero did not place in his next event.  That, however, was the Louisiana Classic.  He followed that with a fifth-place finish at the Ken Cole.  He also won the Jesse James Southwest Shootout, and only one of his five losses during the last month of the season were to someone who did not place in Division I or Division II (and that was to a very good Christopher Strong of Airline).  Yet at the Ken Cole he defeated Walker’s Kye Karcher, to whom Redditt lost in the GBRs.

Nothing appeared to stand in the way of Caballero winning another state title.  He was the #1 seed and Redditt was seeded second.

If a seeding argument were to be made it would have been whether Evangel’s third-seeded Joseph Gilreath should have been seeded second rather than Redditt.  Against Division III opponents, Gilreath was 10-1 while Redditt was 5-3.  That might be explained re the 2022 Brusly Invitational results.  Redditt, before the event, had a 10-6 record against Louisiana competition.  Gilreath’s Louisiana record was 10-7.  The third seed was 13-13.  Yet Gilreath was in the top of the bracket (seeded fifth), lost to Caballero, and placed third.  Redditt was given a bye into the semifinals, which he won prior to also losing to the St. Louis state champion.  When no head-to-head results are available, placements in the same weight class of a tournament determine the seeding.

Quarterfinals

The first of only two championship bracket upsets occurred in the quarterfinals when #5 Colin Dalton of Hannan defeated De la Salle’s #4 Dylan Brown 6-1.  Brown narrowly defeated Dalton via a Sudden Victory 11-9 score in the consolation finals of the Brusly Invitational.

(1) Luke Caballero (StL) pinned (8) Kye Smith (BAS) in 3:52
(5) Colin Dalton (HAN) defeated (4) Dylan Brown (DLS) 6-1
(3) Joseph Gilreath (EVA) pinned (6) Craig Miller (SBR)
(2) Cameron Redditt (BRU) pinned (7) Noah Nichols (JC) in 1:11

Semifinals

The Brusly Invitational paragraph above was of little consequence, however, as Redditt and Gilreath met in the semifinals, a match won by Redditt 12-7.  Redditt, however, did not take a lead until less than 90 seconds remained in the match, and did not take the lead for good until there were less than 40.

(1) Luke Caballero (StL) pinned (5) Colin Dalton (HAN) in 3:10
(2) Cameron Redditt (BRU) defeated (3) Joseph Gilreath (EVA) 12-7

Championship Consolation Rounds

If there was an upstart in the weight class, it would be Basile’s #8 (albeit it is doubtful the weight class was seeded that deep) Kye Smith.  He could be called an upstart just for being in eighth-grade.  Yet, after suffering a loss to Caballero in his first match, he defeated a #4 and #6 seed to place fifth.  That may be considered wrestling beyond his years.  A match like the one against #4 Dylan Brown of De la Salle in the consolation quarterfinals, who outscored him 9-4 in the final period of a 12-11 Smith win, certainly aids that argument.

Smith fell to Gilreath and Miller to Hannan's #5 seed Colin Dalton in the CSFs.

Gilreath pinned Dalton in 1:42 to place third at the Brusly Invitational.  This match went all five minutes, but Gilreath won handily, 10-4.

Smith and Miller had not met previously, and the eighth-grader pinned the sophomore in 1:33 to place fifth.

(3) Joseph Gilreath (EVA) defeated (5) Colin Dalton (HAN) 10-4 to place 3rd
 (8) Kye Smith (BAS) pinned (6) Craig Miller (SBR) in 1:33 to place 5th

Finals

This match was a far cry from their only other match, a 10-2 MD win by Caballero in the Brusly Invitational finals.  Redditt did not give Caballero a chance to do much of anything.  He scored a takedown in the first period, and scored another in the second period after scoring an escape.  He scored two more takedowns in the finals period.  He held Caballero to three escapes en route to a 9-3 win.  His efforts earned him the Division III Outstanding Wrestler award.

(2) Cameron Redditt (BRU) defeated (1) Luke Caballero (StL) 9-3
